Week 11

5/11-5/17

Really low mileage this week, solid workout and ready to roll on Friday though. Satisfying week, but disappointing at the same time. Could have used Friday's race a couple weeks earlier. Finally was able to run fast, feel strong and just haul. Came up short in just about everything this year, disappointing but hungry as hell for cross. Gonna take some time off, get even hungrier, let the little pains subside and then hammer out a huge summer. Big plans for next year. May Miles :: 83 28
Saturday: Most of the Distance Dudes hit the line for one more race. Won it pretty easily, took the lead for good at the start of the last lap, Nolan couldn't deal with it. Closed out our intercollegiate competition with a victory. Quick prediction, he never beats me again. 1
Friday: ECACs. Watched Traina race the 100 then warmed up. Got in some hurdles and felt confident at the line. Legs hadn't been feeling too great, was expecting the race to go poorly, but figured I had nothing to lose by sticking my nose in there. Took over and ran a great race, really pumped, wish I could have run like that earlier. No cool down, talked to Ferenc for a while, getting excited for cross and lamenting a disappointing season. Then took off for review sessions. Maybe I should be going to a "Kinda Sorta College" instead of MIT. Saving the cool down for tomorrow. 4
Thursday: Grass Loops before Nolan's 10k. Spent all day writing my last paper for Age of Reason. Done with 2 classes now, 2 exams left and I'm a junior. Damn. Tough race for Nolan, sometimes the way guys race just pisses me off. Nobody in that field was qualified for Nationals, everybody wanted to go, and nobody would run fast. Bunch of pansies. So now Nolan's all done with his career. That's hard to believe. It's almost halfway through for me. That's a huge shock. 2
Wednesday: Grass Loops with Nolan. Feeling good, getting in some slow, maintenace miles. Worked on 10-12s and some hurdles afterwards. Still aren't judging the distance quite right. Got to get that right, fast. Maybe I should have been a little nostalgic or something, last Grass Loops with P-Rock, but didn't really think of it, just a good run. 3
Tuesday: 8x400 63, 6, 5, 4, 5, 4, 5, 5 (window 64-5). Ran the workout alone, with a disgusting 200m of rest in between. A little too excited on the first one, overcompensated on the second. Hit the rest really well, feeling good today. Opened in 29-31 for all of them, didn't have to work too hard the back half. Feeling pretty tired during the warmup, but not during the workout. Cooled down with 2M of grass loops with Nolan then did some more hurdle work. Schoolwise it's down to one paper and two final exams. 6
Monday: Almost Fresh. Ran after the cross meeting. Pretty excited about that, everybody seems ready to roll, should get in a good summer from everybody and see what we can do next year. But right now, focus is on Friday, and avoiding the premature end of this season and my sophomore year. Had a nice discussion with Yuval about nomenclature, we don't see eye to eye on some stuff, but I'm right and he knows it. Did hurdle drills and went over some hurdles again. Working on getting over one and thinking about the next right away. 6
Sunday: Science->BU Loop. Ran kinda late in the day, just sitting around dejected most of the day. I guess my 15:30 at Bowdoin won't be good enough for ECACs, so my decision was made for me. Got to focus or this could be my last steeple. Stopped at the track halfway through and went over some hurdles. Coach told me I need to be going over at least 1 hurdle 365 days a year, so I get comfortable and don't stutter anymore. They went pretty well, able to switch legs. I need to work on that some more I think. Otherwise feeling alright, a little tired/tight, but nothing I can't easily recover from. 6

Week 10

5/04-5/10

Disappointing end to a week filled with high hopes. Feeling good all week, but couldn't put it together in the race. Stuttering and not judging the hurdles well at all. Got some thinking to do. Mileage low, I think it's paying off, but there's more to running fast. Need to focus on the barriers more during the race. Season's getting really short, need to do something with my sophomore year. May Miles :: 55 45
Saturday: Bad race. 2M warm up, ran like shit, couldn't hurdle, 3M cool down. After the race Coach said "Maybe we should forget about the steeple." Apparently I'm giving up 20-40 seconds by hurdling so poorly. Gave me the option for ECACs. This one hurts, because for the past year I've defined myself as a steepler, and now Coach is saying maybe I simply can't run the race. Got some thinking to do before Monday, when I have to decide. Came back to MIT right after the race. Bad way to end the week. 7
Friday: Sat around watching All New Englands at UNH. Pretty good meet, but poor MIT performances. Watched the end of the hammer throw then took off before Nolan's 5k. Ran along a path through the woods, feeling good, fresh. Desperately need to run fast tomorrow, there should be enough guys out there to pull me to a good time. Nolan didn't race too well, I know that doesn't mean I won't, but doesn't make me any more confident. 2
Thursday: Ran BU with Nolan. He was feeling pretty good and started moving, I just kept it easy and let him go. Met up with Monty before the bridge. Went over a couple hurdles back at MIT. Feeling pretty good, nice and rested. Work is almost all done now, which is good. Leaving tomorrow for UNH, trying to run a qualifier this weekend. 3
Wednesday: 6x400 66, 6, 5, 5, 6, 5 (window 64-5); 10:00 rest, 6x400 65, 5, 6, 6, 6, 5 (64-5). Got up around 7, ate a few rice cakes and played some TriPeaks. Warmed up over to the track at 8AM, ran the workout with Nolan and cooled down back home. Feeling really good this morning, all the times were easy and legs felt strong. The 2nd set was much easier than the first. Nice to have it out of the way early, it'll let me get a lot out of the way today. Everything's winding down and coming together very nicely. A little over 7 hours last night, HR at 43BPM. 7
Tuesday: BU warm up before the workout that didn't happen. Nolan wasn't feeling too hot, and wanted to try it out tomorrow AM, when his foot typically feels better. Fine with me, so we tacked on a Fake Fresh Pond to get some miles and then just spent time stretching and got out early. Nice easy day near the end of the season. It's all about feeling good, do whatever it takes. So we're doing this up around 9AM tomorrow. 8
Monday: Docks with Nolan. Peoples went with us across Longfellow. Good day to run, nice and warm out. Legs were fairly tired though, I can't explain why. Just have to keep pounding down the bananas and Gatorade and water. Nolan was feeling good and running away from me. Earlier in the season I'd push through and go with him, but now I'm just trying to conserve. Hay's in the barn. Workout tomorrow instead of Wednesday, Sean and I welcome back the 10:00 rest typical to the workouts of lesser groups. In a really good mood, excited about the season, but a lot of work is crashing down on me this week, and I gotta do more than keep my head above water, god damn GPA. 8
Sunday: Nice run around the Reservoir from home. Skipped the Summit Ave add on though. Feeling really strong, running pretty quickly today. Nice weather, in a good mood, all in all a great day. Excited about All New Englands this weekend, the term is winding down though, so it's crunch time for a couple classes, which sucks. In any event, got the week off to a solid start, mileage will be low again, it's that time of year. 10

Week 09

4/27-5/03

Good week of low mileage. Really, just the last 3 days sabotaged the total. Not a big deal though, this time of year isn't about mileage. Raced really well at Div3s, which I needed to do. Now the focus is on dropping time, a LOT of time. May Miles :: 10 42
Saturday: Solid 9:26.43 today. Good to be back running fast, moving at the end of the race again, eating fools up. There was only one guy in the field capable of running 9:04, and Easter did, but 7 other guys went with him for the first 2 laps. Nothing like a steeple death, as Coach says. Short 1M cooldown, in case we needed points in the 5k, but we were up big. Didn't get around to adding on anymore, so mileage was low, for the week too, but it ain't about mileage anymore. 5
Friday: Short run around the Bates campus. Got back in time to watch Thad throw the javelin and run the 1500. Raining a little, and cool too. I like the cool, not the rain so much. Things are feeling good again, unable to go over any hurdles, they were all locked up. Easter's going to run fast tomorrow, so I think I'll go out comfortable and then move on everybody who tried to run with him and died. 2
Thursday: BU Loop with Fivos and Brewer. Not feeling as good as I want to yet, but it's coming. They got rolling a little more than I wanted to, so I let them go about halfway through. Been sleeping a lot and feeling good about this weekend. Need to attack the barriers and I'll run fine. Got the seeds today, just Easter and Ferenc in front of me. Weird. 3
Wednesday: Half a workout today. 2x8 2:18, 19 (window 2:14-18); 4x400 64, 5, 5, 5 (window 62-64). Supposed to be 2x8, 6x4, 4x2, but Nolan and I were both feeling pretty trashed, for no apparent reason. Would hit the first 200 of the quarters in 30-31, but then have nothing for the back half. I'd run a 34-35, working way too hard, and open up a gap on Nolan. So after #4 Coach cut the workout short. Probably for the best, wouldn't help the fitness at all, the way we were feeling it would have just dug us into a deeper hole. So we did a 2M warm up loop and called it a day. Couple of short days coming up before Div3s, where we need to be ready to roll. Not going to let this one workout get me down. April Miles :: 279 6
Tuesday: BC with Nolan. Glassbones and Renjifo were with us for the first few miles, then they cut up and over Summit Ave. Hoping for some extranormal action, didn't happen though. Beautiful day, can't complain. Feeling ok, legs a little tired. Got a bit of work due on Friday, but plenty of time to take care of it. 8
Monday: BU Loop before practice, then Eliot Street with Maltas. Nolan was going longer along the river, we turned back early. Beautiful day out, bright and warm. Wanted to go BC, but Nolan wanted river. I think we all know why. Really, really tired today. I chalk it up to having a meet all day Sunday then having to work and get up early the next day, instead of being able to lounge around all day like normal. Coach told me my only obligation is to get my legs feeling good, so I should cut back as much as I need to. 10
Sunday: NEWMACs at Smith. 2M warm up, crappy steeple race, finished 2nd in 9:40 something, 1M cooldown, then 3M more when it was clear I wouldn't need to jump in the 5k. Horrible day, felt bad, ran like shit. At least the team won. 8

4/20-4/26

Saturday: Out the door at 11AM and a nice run around the Beacon Hill area. Feeling good, nice cool weather, a little wet. Might have got moving a little too quick, but my legs feel great. Ready to roll and turn a quick time tomorrow. EVerything's screwed up now though, since I won't be able to work at all tomorrow and I've got other obligations today. 5
Friday: Docks. Found out this afternoon that NEWMACs has been moved to Sunday, because of thunderstorms predicted for tomorrow. Won't be a big deal, I don't think, legs feeling good today. The ice bath must have helped, HR was down around 42 last night too. Got plenty of time to sleep tonight too, but need to get some work done, since I'll be at the meet all day Sunday now. Beautiful day, sunny and in the 60s. 8
Thursday: Ran Ocean with Nolan. Feeling pretty good, legs tired at the start but loosened up pretty well. Slept 8-9 hours last night, don't really remember when I went to bed, and the wake-up time is kinda blurred, but the HR was 44BPM. This morning I was able to drop it down to 41 for a brief second or two. Spitting rain most of the run, but that lightened up by the end. Went over a hurdle a few times, took it down with my trail leg once, right into my Achilles, but nothing worse than a scrape. Highlight of the day was getting in the cold whirlpool, which was at 54 degrees, cold enough to make Nolan whine like a schoolgirl. Hope that makes the legs feel better tomorrow. Should be able to get plenty of sleep tonight. 9
Wednesday: 4x800 2:14, 19, 20, 20 (window 2:16-19); 4x400 63, 4, 5, 5 (62-4); 4x200 28, 8, 7, 8 (29-31). Coach gave us 5:00 between sets on this one, that goes by really quickly. Feeling really good at the start, but let it get a little out of hand, and I think the rest of the workout suffered a little. Unable to hang onto Nolan after the first one, I keep forgetting that guy is in ridiculous shape. Nice to run some quarters without hurdles, but my stomach was kinda sloshing around, I hate it when that happens. Deuces were a lot of fun, Nolan and I got to talking a little. He was a step or two behind me the whole way. Decided to play with him a little on the third one, laid off and then was gonna come roaring back down the homestretch, but he started out really fast, and I had to kill myself just to draw even with him. Nothing like blazing deuces in trainers. Brewer can't hang, that's for sure. Fake'd the cooldown to make today respectable. Feeling pretty tired by the end, calves nice and tired. Now gotta get focused on this weekend, ready to race alone. Nice long practice, almost 3 hours today. Good thing I like this so much. 11
Tuesday: Fresh Pond around the Pond. Rolling pretty good with Nolan. A girl from Harvard was running behind us, so we sped it up a little bit, but we wound up towing her along for a couple miles. Pretty impressive. Legs feeling pretty good, tired near the end, could use some more sleep probably. Did some 10-12 drills on the track and went over a hurdle a couple times, working on accelerating into it. Too bad classes start up again tomorrow. 10
Monday PM: BC w/ Summit Ave add-on and half a warmup loop. Watched Feldman run part of the Marathon, then headed out on the run. Unable to get to the Reservoir because of the course, but not a big deal. Legs a little tired, think it was the proximity of my AM run. Running along the marathon route for the back half of the way, it's a real circus. Did some hurdle drills back on the track, working on accelerating into the hurdle. 9
Monday AM: First AM run in awhile. Went up the Mall through the Garden and aroud in the Common, then back the same way. Feeling good, maybe moving a little too fast, but not a big deal. Town's getting a little crazy cuz of the Marathon. Ran past a group of military and firefighters, at first I thought it was just for the Med Tent, but then I saw the truck that said "Decontamination." 3
Sunday: The Kid is back. Reservoir w/ a Summit Ave add-on and an extra lap around the Reservoir. Ran really late, because I was being incredibly lazy today. Had lunch with Feldman and the guys, he's back for the marathon tomorrow, crazy training. 20M in the AM and speed work in the afternoon! Who does that? Great to see him again, then spent the rest of the day watching "Scrubs" episodes and being lazy. I think I bring a lot of the pain upon myself by procrastinating so much. Anyways, the run itself was great. Went around 8PM and was feeling great. Was pushing the whole time, and really just hauling in general. Felt a lot like the summer runs over the summer, just cutting loose a little and letting it roll. Drinking a gallon of water really makes you cold, and makes you urinate a lot, apparently. It hit me pretty bad about 30 mins in, wasn't expecting it to. On the way down Summit Ave it felt like my eyes were swimming in urine. Stopped at the Gulf Station, no more problems. Didn't interrupt the run at all. Excited about the coming weeks, gotta drop a quick time. Freaking Winkler dropped a 9:18. Is there NOBODY in NE DivIII NOT running this God-forsaken race? Gonna keep the mileage the same this week, get in some more hurdle work, I know I can take it to these guys. 13

Week 07

4/13-4/19

Got some good weather in the middle of the week, but spring continues to elude us. Solid workout, nothing amazing though, it took my legs a little longer to recover from the double I think, I wasn't feeling fresh at all this weekend. Didn't get going as fast as I needed to at Husky, now I'm going to have to drop a fast time alone at NEWMACs. This season is quickly slipping away, and I need to get ontop of it and bust a quick time. April Miles :: 179 65
Saturday: Husky Invite, ran the steeple in 9:37. Race wasn't as good as I wanted it to go, still have a lot of work to do, and a lot of time to drop. Went 2M warm-up, was feeling pretty good. Only slept about 6 last night, almost fell asleep on the bus, but I was feeling good at the start of the race. Cooled down 5M with Ferenc from Keene State, he went 9:25 to win today. Then came back and watched the rest of the meet. Wound up falling asleep for part of it, lying down in the sun. Came home and completely forgot to get out and tack on some extra miles, so the week ended up a little shorter than it should have. 9
Friday: Fake Fresh with Nolan. Pretty low-key day, just running easy and getting ready for tomorrow. Legs felt alright, got nearly 8 hours last night, so that helped. Can feel a bit of a cold coming on though, that's not cool. Weather's still cool, but the sun's out all the time now. It needs to get warm. We've got a couple days off from classes now, so I need to rest up and get ahead on some work. 5
Thursday: Docks. Good old Boston weather, 75 yesterday morning, 35 today. Legs feeling pretty good though, got kinda tired about 30 minutes in, but not a big deal, able to push through. Moving pretty well from Fleet Center on, relaxed, easy day. Need to get on top of some work tonight so I can sleep a lot, got under 6 last night and spent 3 hours in lab this morning. So glad tomorrow is Friday. Did some hurdle drills, but the legs were tired, so I cut them kinda short. 8
Wednesday: 3x800 2:20, 20, 21 (window 2:15-18); 4x400H 65, 7, 8, 9 (71-73); 5x200 28,9,9,8,9 (29-31). Solid workout, but nothing amazing. Since my legs were still feeling a little tired, Coach told me to lay off the 8s and let Nolan go to work, and then focus on running well over the hurdles. Felt pretty good running the 8s, not red-lining, always in control. Nolan busted some fast times though. 400s were alright, not hurdling very well still. Deuces were pretty fun, but they started hurting near the end. The first one just flowed though, all the way through the line. Feels good to run fast again. Fake'd the cooldown to add on some more miles. It was a late one today. 11
Tuesday: Fresh Pond around the Pond. Ran with Nolan, I wanted to Reservoir again, he's got a different agenda, I suppose. Awesome day, prolly hit 80, bright and sunny. Didn't drink enough water though, so a little dehydrated/dry mouth, but nothing bad. Legs pretty tired at the start, but loosened up by the end, got moving fairly quick too. 10-12s afterwards, got in a few decent ones. Gotta get ready to bust at Northeastern. Lifted briefly, had to get to a 6.042 test. First time in the weight room since UTPA, I think. Oh well, I could stand to lose a little muscle. 10
Monday: Reservoir w/ Summit Ave. add-on. Mid 50s and sunny again, went with the hopes of an extra normal day, was disappointed. Only one moment of extra-normalness going around the Reservoir, but it was pretty extra normal. That was basically the focus of the run, legs feeling alright, not pounding it out, just coasting with Nolan. Maybe we'll get rocking tomorrow, we'll see. HR was at 45BPM last night, which is good. Looking at 2 tough days on the school front, then coasting the rest of the week. Had to avail of myself of the Holiday Inn's facilities, really wish that would stop. Just one workout this week, and keeping the mileage steady at 70. Somehow, the season's approaching it's climax. Didn't I just start running? 10
Sunday: Fresh Pond around the Pond from home. Feeling better than I expected to after yesterday's meet. Slept 12+ hours last night, feel like taking a nap today. Legs pretty tired about 10 mins in, but didn't get much worse. Able to keep going at a pretty decent clip. Stopped at the Duncan Donuts by the Pond, about 45 mins in. Thinking about what needs to happen in the coming weeks, everybody keeps dropping quick steeple times. The nice weather continues, sunny and mid 50s, gotta love spring. Just too bad that it comes in fits and starts here. 12

Week 06

4/06-4/12

Rough week academically. The lack of sleep kept the mileage really low, need to bump it up next week, hopefully, but with the double on Saturday I think Coach will want me to take it a little cautiously. Good meet, got to run a couple good races, still have a lot of time I can drop in the steeple though, time I need to drop. Just glad this week is over. April Miles :: 114 69
Saturday PM: Another Orange Line, around 9PM. Needed to get in the miles and shake out the legs before I passed out. Really tired, but felt alright during the run. Nice weather still, running in shorts and tshirt. Went along Orange Line then up to Arlington and into Boston Common a little ways, before coming back through the Gardens and the Mall. 3
Saturday AM: Dual Meet @ Bowdoin. Steeple in 9:44 and 5k in 15:30. Nice day, sun was out and no rain, mid 50s, perfect weather. They have the water barrier on the outside of their track, so that was new, but other than that, the steeple was rather unfulfilling. Just ran away and won. Came back in the 5k needing to finish 3rd to ensure a win, and outkicked Barbuto over the last 100m to take 3rd. 2M cooldown after that with Nolan. Legs feeling pretty good today, guess I'm getting back into shape. Still have a lot of sharpening to do. 9
Friday: Fake Fresh. Somebody unplugged the weather machine today, cold and raining. Not such a bad run though, went shirtless and was feeling pretty good. Running with Nolan and a recruit. Hope tomorrow isn't like this, but the weather report says it's going to be. Took a couple strides to loosen up, but was feeling alright by the end. Not a whole lot of speed right now, that'll come soon though. 5
Thursday: Docks. MIT broke out the Weather Machine today, brought some nice weather for the start of CPW. Feeling really tired, only 4.5 hours last night. This week is really, really starting to suck. Coach said to scratch the mile over hurdles since my legs were feeling like crap and my HR has been kinda high. Looks like tonight could be bad too, hopefully I'll get on top of it. There's a possibility of a steeple/5k double this weekend, so we're cutting miles slightly tomorrow. Gotta get the legs under me. 8
Wednesday: 4x800 2:16, 22, 19, 22 (window 2:18-20); 4x400H 67, 8, 9, 70 (71-73); 4x200 28, 9, 9 9 (30-31). Another day with <5 hours sleep. Somethings gotta give soon. I don't think it's going to be the Institution, but it won't be anymore, just on principle now. Felt a little too good on the first one, running with Nolan and he went on to kick the rest of the workout's ass. I was reeling a little bit through the rest of the 8s. Guess they didn't go horrible, but don't like to see those 22s. Coach told me at the beginning of the workout that the hurdles should be only 2-4 seconds slower than the open 4 would be, which doesn't explain the slow window. Hurdling poorly still, did one pretty well, but almost fell over I was so off balance on the way down. Ran around the last 2 hurdles on the last interval. Deuces were more painful than I remember. Running fast and relatively easy, but the last 50m was pretty tough. Playing around a little bit, letting Nolan get a little ahead then turning it on, or letting Maltas almost catch up before dropping the hammer. I think the biggest thing I lost in the 6 weeks off was the ability to run workout, which, as Nolan pointed out, isn't directly proportional to your fitness. I was hoping it'd be back for this workout, hopefully next week. I feel like that translates to races too, how you respond when the legs go to shit and you're swimming in pain. The seven days are going to be hell, schoolwise, but then it lightens up. 12
Tuesday: BC Reservoir with a Summit Ave add-on. Nolan cut off the Reservoir, so it was just Renjifo and I after that. Feeling pretty tired at the beginning, moving at a respectable pace but clearly not killing, and not about to. Not sleeping very much recently, the next 7 days or so will be pretty tough. Snowed last night, what the crap? This winter has gone on long enough, it's been 5 months without much of an end in sight. Ever heard of spring? Did 10-12s afterwards, in the snow on the infield, went alright, but nothing amazing. 10
Monday: Fresh Pond around the Pond. Feeling pretty tired, but managed to pick it up about 10-15 mins in. But at the far end of the Pond, I could hear the waves lapping on the shore and my stomach sloshing around, and had to take a pit stop at the Sunoco. After that I felt pretty good for maybe 10 mins, until the knot came back in my stomach, made it back to campus without any problems though. After another pit stop I was feeling a lot better. Legs felt really tired the whole way, but was still able to run pretty quick. Originally planned on adding on, but decided against it. Need to get some sleep and get the legs recovered. First day in the new kicks, another pair of Motos, picked them up at Marathon this morning. Hurdle drills were pretty good. Got loose and felt like I was hurdling really well. Need to get my act together, Remsen went 9:10, Miller went 9:18, everybody's dropping quick times. Well, not everybody.... 10
Sunday PM: Was going to run Longfellow-BU, wholly uninteresting mileage, around 7:30 at night, but the connection to Longfellow was closed again, so I just ran around Boston again. A little bit around the bottom of Beacon Hill, until I popped out at the Common. Cut across that to Tremont, and took Tremont west. Was going to go to Mass Ave, but the run was getting long, so I cut up Clarendon, just past Addis Red Sea, and rode that up to Commonwealth, and came down the Mall til I got home. Good shakeout run, legs not feeling amazing though. Still tired. 5
Sunday AM: Engineer's Cup, non-scoring and low-key since it was rescheduled. Not up for the steeple, and hurlding like shit. One of the worst races I've run, I need to stop clowning around and learn how to steeplechase. 2M warmup and 3M cooldown. I'll add on later. Kinda windy and cold; less than ideal, but not horrible conditions. Impressive performance from Nolan, straight 72s to a 14:56, after dropping a 4:08 earlier in the day. That kid is fit. Got to start the AM runs back up and get some mileage in, running out of time. 7

Week 05

3/31-4/05

Good week of training, alright track day, nothing amazing though. We'll see how this meet works out, getting postponed until tomorrow. Need to get better at hurdling, and could use some more sleep. And some speed. And for this term to end. Hard to come back to this weather after a week in beautiful Texas. Gotta do what you gotta do. April Miles :: 45 69
Saturday: Ran through downtown Boston. Pretty crappy day, cold and rainy, but by 4:30 it wasn't too bad, so I got out the door then. Started out with a little Orange Line, then kept going through downtown until I hit Chinatown. Ran through Downtown Crossing a la Docks, then cut over to Beacon Hill area, and down to Government Center. Then I didn't really know where I was, until I realized I was running down the street we run up during Docks, so I hooked a left over to the Statehouse and came home down Commonwealth. Good run, short but feeling sharp. I like throwing in a new run every once in awhile. 5
Friday: Castle with a BU Loop add-on. Really weird day, found out the meet's being postponed due to the weather, racing on Sunday and just steepling, since it's now non-scoring. As a result though, had to run real mileage today, but there was a team meeting at 6:15 to explain everything, so we hit up a Castle Loop, and I added on afterwards. Castle was pretty weird today, moving at a good pace, because Nolan was hammering at the beginning and at the end. Icy at parts due to the rain yesterday and the snow and cold temps today. I guess it's supposed to be sleeting tomorrow, so the track would be covered with ice and the drains frozen, so throwing circles would be underwater, etc. It shouldn't be a big deal though, maybe disrupt training for a couple days, but nothing bad. 10
Thursday: BC Reservoir w/ Summit Ave. add-on. Had to piss like a racehorse halfway through, had to break out the poor man's outhouse. Feeling really tired and sore at the beginning, the hills were killing me too. Still not back in shape I guess, I assume that I was feeling the effects of yesterday. The back end of the run was pretty good, running at a reasonable clip through the misty weather. Did hurdle drills and 10-12s, but I was really tired and tight and they were sub-par. Went to Marathon to buy a new pair of shoes, they're being shipped in from the Brookline store. Realized on the run I should have just paid for them and picked them up when I ran past the store! Anyways, I should have them by the weekend. Need to start checking the HR more consistently. 10
Wednesday: 2x1200 3:36, 36 (window 3:36); 3x800 2:18, 22, 22 (2:20-22); 4x400 (w/ hurdles) 72, 2, 3, 3 (72-74). Feeling pretty good today. The 12s were good, followed Nolan on the first one and lead with straight 72s for the second. Got in a good 8 behind Nolan, but led the next one and just ran slow. First quarter in 69 and wasn't able to push continuously on the back half. Nolan would come next to me and I'd pick it up but fall off pace soon afterwards. On the last 800 Nolan ran away from me after the first 400. I think I lost my ability to lead intervals, need to get back to the Feldman style. Damn that's a good style. Hurdles weren't all that great, ran around a couple, but I'm getting better at hurdling at race pace. Need to work on taking off a little sooner, and the trail leg. Cold and rainy today, that wasn't so fun. Hands finally warmed up on the last interval. Ran the cool down mileage in the basement tunnels of MIT, that was pretty sweet, and dry. Fairly good workout, I think I'm still a week away from really busting a nut. These 400s over hurdles are really cramping my style though, can't get in a complete workout. Managed to get a decent amount of sleep last night, going to pay for that tonight it appears. Need to get to Marathon to pick up some new kicks. So glad The Cheat is not dead. 10
Tuesday: Fresh Pond around the Pond. Ran the whole way with Nolan and Carlos. We were moving pretty well, didn't blow it open though, keeping in mind the workout tomorrow. Felt really good though, legs a little tired but could have pounded it out nonetheless. Running with a full bladder on the way back though, that was less than enjoyable. Hurdle drills went pretty well, need to improve on them though. Got about 5 hours last night, need to get back on top of the work. Tonight looks to be fairly light though, should get some much needed rest. 10
Monday: Fartlek 8x1:30 around Jamaica Pond, tacked on a BU Loop to compensate for the missed AM run. Running really well today, legs feeling good. In the middle of the second one I decided to make it a death march, since I figure that's the best weapon I've got right now. Lost all my finesse, but I can always make it a death march. carlos was the only guy to come with me, dropped Wildman and Nolan on the third interval. Carlos was trucking on the fourth one, but the tables turned from the fifth one on, and I started booking it. Had Tom look at my left hamstring when I got back, just a precaution because I could feel it occasionally last week. Nothing really wrong though, just need to stretch it aggressively for a few days. Maybe break out The Stick too. March Miles :: 143 11
Sunday: Out and back down Col. Rowe Blvd. from the hotel. Woke up at 6AM to get the run in, we're going home today and travelling is taking all day. Nice sunrise run, don't do enough of those. Heard a rooster crow at sunrise for the first time. Pretty cool at the start, could see my breath and everything, depressing reminder of what we're going back to. Not sore from the racing, which was good. Took awhile to wake up, but after that the run was great. Finished up well, not rigging at all, ran for 86 minutes. Last week that was about where I started rigging really bad. Got a lot of work for this week that didn't get taken care of during break (imagine that!) Going back to school. 13

Week 04

3/23-3/29

Good training week, nice to be down in the warm weather of south Texas. Didn't realize how close we were to Mexico. Probably could have run there from the hotel had I known what I was doing. Long run on Sunday showed me pretty exactly where my limits are right now. Got in the mileage, will bump it up next week too. Horrible races at the end of the week though. Need to get back in the racing mindset and in racing shape. Scraped off the majority of the crap that accumulated during my injury, but there's a lot of fine tuning to do, some more spot cleaning, both in the legs and in the head. March Miles :: 119 69
Saturday: Meet at UTPA. Not a very remarkable performance. Warmed up 2M, steepled, cooled down 3M, Coach threw me in the 5k, so I ran that (didn't really race) and cooled down a mile around the track. Very tired at the end of the day. I'm still a week or two (at least) away from being back in good shape. Wanted to get up and do a shakeout run this morning, but couldn't get my lazy ass out of bed. BUffy The Vampire Slayer was on HBO, so I watched part of that after breakfast, before leaving for the track. Solid, long day, but not a very good one. Definitely have a lot of work to do, got to get down to it. More about the races here. 12
Friday: Ran up Chapin and did 2 laps around a dirt path just off the road. Feel ok, legs a little tired, but I'll take care of that today. Lots of carbs and water and kick the feet up. I thought I could feel the knee a little bit walking around before the run, I've been a little negligent with stretching and stuff, need to get back ontop of that. Didn't bother me during the run though. Otherwise, things are going good, ready to race. 5
Thursday PM: Easy 3M with Nolan, Wildman and Fivos. Went around 9:30 and could still feel the Fuddrucker's burger in my stomach. Made the end of the run not so fun. Legs felt good though. This afternoon we watched Boehlke in Johnny Be Good on HBO. 3
Thursday AM: Ran east on Schunior for 20 min then turned north for another 10. Solid hour, not hammering but running well. Had to use the poor man's outhouse when I turned around, otherwise no problems. High 80s with blue skies, beautiful day. Did 10-12 drills back on the track, those went really well. Want to race, don't feel sore at all from yesterday. Think I've scraped off all the junk that accumulated while cross training. Another couple weeks and I should be feeling great. 9
Wednesday: 2x1600 4:56, 56 (window 4:55); 3x800 2:20, 23, 21 (2:24); 4x400 with hurdles 70, 73, 71, 72 (70-72). Ran off of Wildman's shoulder the first 1100m of the first mile, then broke away to chase Nolan. Didn't catch him, just stayed a constant distance behind him. He blew me away the second mile though, hammered wire to wire. First half mile was good, tried to hang on, but dropped off. Came back strong over the last 200m though, caught up back up to him. Other halves were pretty good, but I dropped off of Nolan after 500m. The quarters over hurdles were pretty poor, really tired and lazing over them. Stuttering and popping the hips. Need to get it down, not as comfortable as during the drills. Cooled down 2 and a half, thinking about throwing in an afternoon run. Good to get back at the workouts. 8
Tuesday: Down to Freddy Gonzalez Drive and over to a 4-lane road with a sidewalk and bike lane. Good run today, much better than yesterday's. Got to the vegetables yesterday and better sleep, so I was feeling rested and ready to roll. Didn't hammer much though, just rolling with the guys. Nolan, Wildman, Verbal, Fivos. Turned back at 30 mins, Nolan went longer, the others shorter. Tacked on a couple more minutes running around UTPA campus. Went over hurdles, this time running. Getting better at them, not close to perfect, but I'm getting comfortable with them. Able to go with either leg now. Drove down to South Padre Island, it's pretty dead though, the big spring break rush was two weeks ago. Got in a good beach football game and some wave jumping too. Then a couple minutes along the water with Verbal and Fivos, barefoot. Nice, relaxing day. 10
Monday: Horrible run. From UTPA went up and over to Sugar Road. Ran until that ended then turned back. Took about 20 minutes to get to the turnaround point, and I was dead when I got there. Pushed a little far yesterday and didn't sleep consistently over the past day and a half. and ate very poorly as well. Really dragging the last couple minutes. Wanted to go 10M, but couldn't make it. Cut it short and decided to rest up. Did hurdle drills and Coach said they were looking good. Just the passive drills though, no real hurdling. 8
Sunday: Out and back down Commerce Street in San Antonio. Started travelling at 4AM, got running just before 3PM. Feeling really good though, stretching out the legs and moving quick, but not trucking, not even close to trucking. Just a simple out and back, stopped at Our Lady of the Lake University to get water and douse ourselves twice, once on the way out and again on the way back. Not ready for this run, really. Hadn't been drinking enough water and was burning up at the end. Also, about 80-85 minutes into the run I was rigging horribly. Went a little too far, I think, not quite ready for the distance yet. Spent a good half an hour by the bubbler in the mall stretching on the cool marble floor. Spent a few hours in San Antonio then got back in the vans and drove down to McAllen. Plan is a fartlek mid-week and assessment of hurdles to decide on Saturday's race. 14

Week 03

3/16-3/22

Great week, great week. Came back from the injury finally, logging some miles and real runs. Glad I'm running with the guys again, feel back on the team. The cross training days appear to be behind me. Taking off for Texas ass early on Sunday, travelling will suck, but a solid week of training and then a race will be worth it. Got that Milk Challenge under the belt as well. March Miles :: 50 46
Saturday: Ocean, plus to and from campus. Met the guys to run at 3PM, the weather was great, sunny and warm. Feeling alright, not spectactular though. Fairly sure I didn't puke up all the milk yesterday. Getting ready to leave for TX, looks pretty promising for racing. Still no pain, and moving pretty quickly again. Fivos and I took the lead and hammered down Newbury near the end of the run. Great to be back. 11
Friday: Fresh Pond around the Pond. Ran with Nolan, Wildman and C-Los. Good to run with some guys and get a feel of my fitness, because my feel for pace has eroded. Earlier I couldn't tell if I was running quickly or not, but today I know I was moving. Got rolling pretty good, dumped at 60 flat, maybe the course is a little short. Had some stomach problems getting off of Fresh Pond, just held it until we got back to MIT though. Pretty tired when we got back, but a good workout. Exactly what I needed. Strides felt pretty good too. Had a meeting about going to TX, then it was time for the 4th annual Milk Contest. I made my way through the gallon of 2% in 53 minutes and held in down until the hour expired. Tried to make myself heave it back up, it wasn't working, so I broke out the gag reflex. First and only time. Necessary though, don't need to be trying to digest a gallon of milk. Glad I was able to pound it down this time around, won't have to try it again. 10
Thursday PM: BC straight up with 10 min on the cross trainer. Feeling really good, started hammering a little after 15 min, backed off on the hills, didn't want to challenge the IT Band too much. Didn't really pick it up too much after that though, found a good pace and cruised. I'm really out of shape, need to do something soon. I feel like my legs are pretty good, but there's a layer of junk/lethargy etc. preventing me from getting there. I hope that my base hasn't completely disintegrated and that I can bust my legs back into racing shape and take advantage of my IAP work. Strides felt better, not as awkward, but holding a sustained effort is tough still. The distance crew threw down a great workout today, too. 8
Thursday AM: 25 min in the pool. Able to get my lazy ass moving this morning. Nothing remarkable to report. We bombed Baghdad yesterday, kids walking out of classes today. Whatever, this needs to be done. 0
Wednesday: Fake Fresh Pond then 30 min on the crosstrainer. I'm a lazy bitch and couldn't bring myself to workout this morning. Need to get better about that. It'd be easier if I didn't have to crosstrain. Anyways, the knee was a little tender at certain times this morning, think maybe I went a little overboard yesterday, but I felt great today, no pain. Did some strides after the run, just felt slow and awkward, no pain. I feel like stepping it up, need to get the legs back in shape. I'm way too tired for running just 17M in 3 days. 5
Tuesday PM: Fresh Pond then 15 on the crosstrainer. Damn. Good day ran with virtually no pain. Could feel the knee about 30 mins in, so I stopped and stretched the IT Band, loosened up and stopped hurting after that. Think I was focusing on the knee when I could feel it, that may have exacerbated the pain slightly. Regardless, got in the miles, but I'm very out of shape. 22 mins in my legs were aching, it'll take some time to get them used to running again, it's been awhile. Can't deny the hugeness of today, going to TX now, prolly hold off on the workouts and likely the racing, but I'm on the way back. Need to keep treating it though, I'm back on the healthy side but I'm sure it can swing back just as suddenly as it did originally. 7
Tuesday AM: 20 in the pool. Cruising, feeling good. Legs pretty tired after yesterday though. Good thing spring break is coming up and I can rest and get back in shape. 0
Monday: BU to Longfellow, then 25 on the cross trainer. Got back in Boston after some delays of my flight. Wound up missing class but not practice. Just perfect. Tom said since I was feeling good I should just try it out. Warmed up and stretched and all that good stuff, then took off. Nothing like running shirtless on a 60 degree day alongside a frozen river. That ice must have been ridiculously thick. Anyways, the nice weather brought a lot of people out and I was rolling them all up. No pain at all in the knee or hip, which is excellent. Going to be cautious and not push it too much, Tom wants to hold off on the workouts for awhile still, we'll see what happens. Good day. 5
Sunday: Went 60 min on the cross trainer and another 30 in the pool. Exhibited considerable restraint today by not running, despite the beautiful weather and no pain. Knee feels really stable, only feel hip pain occasionally. Been keeping up with the stretching, think we're getting on top of this thing, finally. Looking forward to running tomorrow. This is a big week, it'll decide if I'm going to TX with the team for spring break, so I need to start running soon. Still got in a good workout though, and then some great XU brunch! 0

Week 02

3/09-3/15

Things are looking up. Didn't run any mileage this week, but got some really good treatment in with Tom. Dr. Boland didn't have any insights, which was disappointing, but being able to run pain-free on Saturday bodes well. Hopefully I'm on the way back to being healthy, and will be able to save the season. March Miles :: 004 0
Saturday: It was 60s and sunny in Cincy, so I ran for a little while before cross training. Went a few mins with Kathryn and wasn't feeling any pain, so I picked it up for a little while. Only went about 10 mins and never really got rolling, but didn't feel any pain. Threw on some strides afterwards. Then did another 45 minutes on the cross trainers at XU, which are pretty terrible since they're never cleaned and the tracks are covered in dirt. But I got the time in, really excited about not having any pain. We'll see what Tom says when I get back to MIT. 0
Friday: 60 min on the cross trainer in the Z Center early. I'm going to Cincinnati this weekend, so needed to get the workout in this morning. Feeling good still, no pain on the crosstrainer, but a little sore afterwards. Stretched out then went to classes. Looking more and more like straight Bs in Course VI. More reason to get healthy and avoid redshirting, there's no way I'd ever be able to MEng with a 4.0. It's supposed to be in the 60s this weekend in Cincy, I'm really going to want to run. We'll see how the knee feels. 0
Thursday PM: 20 min cross training, 4:30 on the track (pain free) then another 40 on the cross trainer. Tom says that the lump on the side of my thigh he's been working on feels more mobile, it should be just a matter of time before it goes away. After that, he's confident I'll be able to run. He's reluctant to push it right now, but I really want to start running again. Need to get back on track and salvage something. I'm hoping that the base I laid down in January will carry over enough and that Coach'll find some way to get me ready to go. Trying to stay patient, but I'm getting really anxious. It was harder to crosstrain today knowing I should be in Greencastle, IN right now. 0
Thursday AM: Saw the doctor. Nothing new. No problems in the joint itself, both the IT Band and the hamstring are sore, it could be either or both. No new suggestions, just keep working with Tom, it'll run its course. He did mention "overuse." I wish he hadn`t said that. I don't even like the word, I think it's more an issue of misuse than overuse. I wasn't running too much, I just wasn't taking good enough care of myself. The past 6-8 months have been a giant leap forward in my training and thinking, but not in the way I've been taking care of my body. 0
Wednesday PM: 50 min on the cross trainer with 1 lap jog halfway through. Really, really tired, both in my quads and in general. Didn't feel like cross training at all today, pretty lazy. Getting frustrated too, want to run, need to run. Not much else is new, been slacking off on the homework, it's catching up to me now, a little behind going into Thursday and Friday. Seeing Dr. Boland tomorrow, hopefully he'll fix me. 0
Wednesday AM: 20 min in the pool. Pretty tired again, but did sleep 7 hours, so I don't really understand what's going on. Knee's feeling good and strong, feel like maybe today's the day to try running. 24 hours until I see the doc, so maybe I ought to wait. 0
Tuesday PM: 60 min on the cross trainer. Knee a little sore after all the work Tom did on it. Coach is back in town now, making fun of all the injured distance runners (all of us, just about.) Not a whole lot of improvement, we'll wait and see what Dr. Boland has to say on Thursday, then probably start training and working with the pain. We'll see. 0
Tuesday AM: 20 min in the pool. Feeling pretty good this morning, tired when I woke up, but I shouldn't be, since I got almost 9 hours last night. Went to get XRays, the most trying experience of late. So I wanted to get them at MIT Medical so that MIT's insurance would pay for them, but I forgot to bring in the slip explaining what to get to Tom yesterday, so he just guessed and was pretty much right. I brought in the MGH slip, hoping that would clarify and I'd get whatever I needed to get, but it just made things worse. I think I maybe offended some people by wanting to go to MGH, but if the MIT doctors didn't suck so much ass I wouldn't have to. So one woman said she wouldn't authorize them, I don't know what her problem was, Tom had already authorized them. So they called Tom and that pretty much took care of it. I was getting pretty mad/frustrated, but figured that yelling wouldn't help out too much. Long and the short of it though, I got the XRays. I hope I never get hurt again, for the sole reason of avoiding MIT Medical. They suck way too much to have egos the size of theirs. 0
Monday: 30 min on the cross trainer, then 200m jog, then another 30 minutes and another lap. Hip was pretty tender throughout today, which is disappointing. I was hoping for 3 good days in a row. Felt great the first lap, but the second go 'round it was pretty tender. More massage/exploration by Tom, everything in that area where the quad attaches to the IT Band is really painful. Going to the Doc on Thursday, getting XRays tomorrow. Pretty sure the XRays will be nothing exciting. Going to just keep it steady through Thursday, debating whether or not to run Thursday AM before the appointment. Going to start AM workouts in general, been slacking on that. 0
Sunday: 90 min on the cross trainer in the Z Center in the AM. Wanted to get in the pool for part of today, but there was still that freakin' swim meet. An hour and a half of watching closed-captioned TV, that's exhilarating. But of course, my whole life is exhilarating. I thought the high point came when Colin Powell was first on Fox's Sunday show, then moved over to Meet the Press, but that was topped shortly by Condolezza Rice being on CBS' Face the Nation and ABC's Sunday show simultaneously. I was stunned. Then went over to BU to watch Verbal. He ran a 2:27 and finished 7th, was forced to push the pace since nobody else was. On the scale last night I weighed in at 174, which is 10 pounds heavier than I thought I was, so the 10 minute abs are making a comeback. I need to start racing again. Today was another beautiful day, spring is threatening to show up, but I'm pretty sure there'll be at least one more cold spell. 0

Week 01

3/02-3/08

Disappointed on Monday, tough week academically kicked my ass. Finished up well though, the knee is starting to feel a lot better, I think the massage stuff that Tom's doing is helping out a lot, even though ii is ridiculously painful. Appointment in under a week, I think I'm on the healing track. March Miles :: 4 4
Saturday: 70 min on the cross trainer. Wanted to switch it up with a little cross trainer/pool combo, but there was a swim meet or something going on. Found Tom beforehand, got a little stretch then used the foam roller. Yuval was finishing up when I started, and Glassbones came up after 10 minutes. Went after watching Verbal go 2:26.3 at IC4As to set the school record in the 1000. He exploded on the third lap, pretty sweet. Pretty warm up, threatening spring like weather, and the knee was feeling great, it was tempting to try running. Went a lap around the track in the middle of the session, felt pretty good. I know I shouldn't run on it yet, but I'm so tempted. 0
Friday: 50 min on the cross trainer. Felt pretty good today, relatively light day with Tom. Afterwards I saw Tom again and he did a little more, looking at the other leg too. Apparently the quad is really tight, and that's making my IT band tight and sore. Just going to have to keep on it with the friction massage, etc. Need to sort out the doctor stuff, there's some insurance complications, MIT Medical pretty much sucks at times. Drove out to the UAA Conference Meet at Brandeis. End ran 15:23, pretty good race. We missed the first half but he was moving strong over the back half. 0
Thursday: 60 min in the pool. Light day in the trainers today, which I needed. Tom did do one thing though, had me bend my knee while he grabbed my IT Band. Damn that sucked. It wasn't overly painful, moreso just impossible. I honestly didn't think I could move my leg while he was grabbing at it. Pool was good today, no pain at all, but walking around afterwards it started to get sore. Tom stretched me out afterwards too. Have 2 doctor's appointments next week, need to get this finally fixed. 0
Wednesday: 60 min on the cross trainer. Tom put me through hell today in the trainers. He found a spot on the IT band, on the top of it, where it hurt horribly. Apparently it was above the spot he found yesterday, so it looks promising. But he just kept shoving his fingers into it, and using his other hand to put more pressure on it. Then his fingers would slip off and I'd be in agony. He did this for 15 minutes or so. It hurt so bad I was sweating when he finished. It's still pretty tender there, almost like it's bruised. So I'm icing that down tonight. After practice I took my 6.002 test, pretty sure I rocked that. Today was a good day, need more sleep. 0
Tuesday: 40 min the pool. Knee was hurting basically since the end of practice yesterday. Especially bad going up and down stairs. Not as bad as the first weekend, but far worse than in recent weeks. Tom started digging around in my knee instead of the hip, and found where the IT band joins the quad and hamstring, and said that everything was adhered there, which apparently is bad. It's also painful, but hopefully he's helping loosen it up. He used his fist and basically pushed it onto my IT band with all his weight. After that he went at that spot with his thumb, which was hellish pain. In the pool the quad was sore, due to the fact I'll prolly have a bruise tomorrow (a la Binesh in Running With The Buffaloes.) The biggest problem was that the knee was still sore, so after 40 minutes I climbed out. Went to see Tom again afterwards, just easy stretching though. The appointment is set for the morning of March 12th with some dude out at MGH. 0
Monday: Harvard Square Loop. Tried running today, a big disappointment. Wanted to go five, so I headed down to run a Fake Fresh Pond, but about 13 minutes in my knee was hurting again, worse than before, and I could tell it wasn't about to loosen up. Turned on JFK Street and headed home, knee was aching, but never shooting pains or feeling like it's about to give out. Still, I would have liked to feel far less pain. Came back and added on 20 minutes on the cross trainer so that the day wasn't a complete waste. Did some hurdle drills too, but those bothered the hip and knee, just made them tight and sore, so I cut them short. Did the foam roller with far less pain today, which doesn't make sense to me. Going to set up an appointment to see an orthopaedic/sports med doc at MGH tomorrow. This has to stop sometime. This week is pretty hellish for me too, a paper and two tests atop my normal workload. I can think of a thousand places I'd rather be and a thousand things I'd rather be doing, but this is where I am and this is what I have to do, and it's time to hunker down and get to work. 4
Sunday: Walked to campus to get some cross training in before they went green in Vegas. Tried to get some work done this morning, but it wasn't happening. I think this weekend has been the turning point in the semester, I'll be playing catch up until May now. Got 80 minutes in on the cross trainer, they had some ski jumping on one of the TVs I watched for awhile, but that didn't help a whole lot, still boring as all hell. Hip and knee were a little sore at the end, but got it stretched out pretty well. Bought lunch and walked home through the rain. Good day, hopefully the last one on the Angry Zach. 0

Week 00

2/23-3/01

Hopefully a good week. Did a lot of cross training and work in the training room. That stuff gets really tiresome easily, so hopefully I can get out on the roads, I'm ready for outdoors to start. Got to watch some good races this weekend, that's got me more motivated now, and missing it too. We'll see what happens, hopefully there'll be some respectable mileage for March. March Miles :: 0 0
Saturday: Rode back to campus with Yuval after watching the rest of All New Englands. Brian rad a pretty bad race, but still blazed a 1:52.89. Found Tom at a gymnastics meet and had him stretch me out before jumping the fence to the cage in Johnson. Tom said it feels like things are getting better, which was very encouraging to hear. Plan is still to try running on Monday. Got a lot of work this coming week though, got to get on top of that. 0
Friday: 55 minutes on the cross trainer. Typical day, bored out of my mind on the cross trainer. Things the same at the trainers. Went over to BU to watch All New Englands, Verbal dropped a 1:52.07. That kid is stroke. The 5k wasn't so hot, would have liked to see the Div3 guys get racing better, but when you're on the sidelines, you don't get to make those calls. February Miles :: 65 0
Thursday: Hour on the cross trainer after finishing up 6.002 Lab. It was pretty late, so I just stretched on my own instead of going through all the stuff with Tom. Only went 50 minutes today, quads really sore and just tired and run down in general. This week is getting long, but at least it's almost over. 0
Wednesday: In the pool for an hour. No pain at all, which is good, because earlier I could always feel it running the pool, and that was on 9-12 Ibuprofen a day. Did the first 15 minutes alone, but then Yuval came in and joined me for the last 45. He's got some hip pains, so he's taking it easy for now. It was good time, except for the swimmer who got in our lane for a little bit. The pool is vastly superior to cross training, because you're actually going somewhere. Although both are far worse than running. 0
Tuesday: Would've gone in the pool today, but didn't have anything but grays. So I got on a cross trainer again after the routine. Can't feel the knee ever, so it's hard to get a reading on how well I'm recovering. I feel like I should be alright, but the stuff with Tom still hurts a lot and everyonce in awhile I can feel something in my knee. I'm getting paranoid though, because normally I'd ignore things like that, since they're normally benign and not injuries. But every sensation coming out of my knee and hip is amplified now. That's not a good way to be living. 0
Monday: Went to talk to Tom after classes today. Had planned on having him stretch me out and then take the rest of the day off, but he said that time off won't help it out any, so we started in on a full-blown recovery program. Earlier, it was all about controlling the problem so I could train, as futile as that turned out to be. Now we need to irradicate the problem, so we'll be a little more aggressive over the next few weeks and hopefully I'll be ready to drop a fast time down in Texas. The strategy is stretch on my own, then warm up on the cross trainer, then get some ultrasound and Tom then stretches me out and digs his thumb into my TFL, and I come close to crying. Then crosstrain and stretch out well afterwards, using the foam roller too. Going to cross train for a solid week, no running, and hopefully that'll solve the problem. No drugs anymore, and only icing occasionally, there's no swelling to control, so it won't help any really. Went for an hour today on the Angry Zach. 0
Sunday: Nothing at all. Woke up and sat around, couldn't bring myself to work really. Watched them race at The Rock, that was pretty good. Rusty was strong early and faded, Jarret came on at the end to take the win away from Kurt Bush. That kid knows how to drive his hot rod though, watch for him to make a charge for the Cup this year. 0
