| Week 12 2/16-2/22 |
A very disappointing week. The mileage was hardly anything, and the race reflected my lack of training. I had hoped to go in a bust a good time, but instead, I suffered my second consecutive Div3 indoor choke. Not a good way to finish off the indoor season at all. Pretty down right now, having done all that work in January and then implode in February without turning a single fast time. I think I just need some time away to regroup and refocus, then I'll come back hard for outdoors and that steeple. February Miles :: 65 | 29 |
| Saturday: | Ran the 5k at New England Division III Championships. Felt pretty good going in, raining pretty hard on the warmup but I was confident things would go alright. Got to the line excited after watching Sean finish up his 3k. Took the lead about halfway through, but then my legs were pretty much shot and started fading, hard. I finished up really slow and Coach and I decided to shut it down afterwards. No cooldown, I'm going to take some time off and hopefully recover for outdoors. | 5 |
| Friday: | BU Loop. Watched most of the pentahalon then stretched out and went running. Felt good, the legs did. Really fresh and energetic. Walking around the felt horrible, but actually running they felt really strong and sharp. The knee hurt a little bit more today, I think because we were all a little more excited today, running around throwing snowballs, etc. It was loose on the strides, and I took a cold whirlpool, and I'll ice and Ibuprofen tonight, so it should be alright. Felt really quick on the strides. | 3 |
| Thursday: | Fake Fresh Pond. Hard to believe it's already Thursday. Felt alright, knee got a little tight near the end of the run, but for the most part it was pretty good. Roads sloppy and wet, because temps got into the 40s today and our mountains of snow began to melt. Shoes pretty well soaked early, but whatever, you don't notice it after a little while. Strides felt good today, jumped in the cold whirlpool for a brief while afterwards. Excited about this weekend, just have a little work tonight then I'm sleeping. | 5 |
| Wednesday: | 2M warmup then 3x100m then 3M cool down. Not much of a workout per se, at least not the kind I'm used to, but it was good one none the less. First time I've run fast outside of racing in 3 weeks. Felt really good, Coach said he's never seen me that fast before. Running into the 100s and hitting 12s from the inside lane. Eating up Nolan in about 30m, but that's not saying much. Felt like I was blazing them really, hopefully that feeling will continue through Saturday. Figure it's because of my massive taper, if you look at the mileage it's dropped precipitously, and the crosstraining does not make up for that, really. Knee was great during the workout, the warmup and cooldown I could feel it though, but it wasn't bad really. Won't get any treatment this week on it (by treatment I mean pain at the hands of Tom) but maybe early next week. | 5 |
| Tuesday: | Ran down to BU's track, which was closed, then a bit further along Comm Ave before coming home. Had a flight this morning get cancelled, and got on a flight supposed to leave at 2:50. That turned out to be more like 5:30 since Logan only had a single runway for landing open. Got home around 8 and laced them up immediately and hit the roads. By then the sidewalks were mainly clear, but there are mounds of snow everywhere. Something over 20 inches yesterday. MIT was closed today, so the track got locked, but BU was supposed to be open. Guess I got there too late though. Thought about trying to add some brief accelerations into the run to make up for the missed workout, but the roads were too slippery, so I just logged some miles. Been a rough couple days. | 6 |
| Monday: | 5M Loop. Flight back got cancelled today, it is dumping on Boston right now. Supposed to have a 6x100m workout, but Coach said to just wait and run it tomorrow when I get back to MIT. Managed to run pretty well despite the lack of plowed sidewalks, but I think all the slipping of my feet didn't help the knee out at all, it was pretty sore the whole time. Iced and stretched as well as I could afterwards. Still got a bit of a cold, but I got that on the run. Felt good when I was running, wish I could have gotten in the speedwork though. | 5 |
| Sunday: | Bad day for training. The roads were completely iced over due to freezing rain last night, and there was snow on top of it to boot. Went outside to test it out and almost bit it on the third step. No indoor tracks around, so I went to the pool, but only got in 20 minutes before they kicked me out because they were closing it down due to the condition of the roads. So I decided I could just take it easy that day, stretch well and consider it a day to let the knee recover somewhat. Hurts to miss days this close to the end though. | 0 |

| Week 11 2/09-2/15 |
Another disappointing week. Low mileage but at least I was able to run, and it was augmented by 240 mins cross training, so hopefully that'll do something. Need to get focused for next weekend and get ready to roll. Hopefully this knee shit will go away, but I'm not holding my breath. At least it's lessening in severity, can't feel it racing or running fast, that's all the really matters. I just don't know how long I can keep racing with this poor of training. February Miles :: 036 | 28 |
| Saturday: | Laced 'em up to race Nolan over 3000m, Adam Fitzgerald was supposed to show but didn't. Jerk. Anyways, race felt alright but wasn't fast at all. Glad to get one in before Div3s, feel like I lost a lot of sharpness over the past weeks. Cooled down just 2M, wanted to go 5M but the knee started to tighten up early on, so I just shut it down then got stretched out. Watched most of the rest of the CoEd Invite, talked to Verbal after he went 4:12 at BU, then left early to catch a plane and go out of town for the weekend. Today wasn't a very good day, but it was step in the right direction. | 6 |
| Friday PM: | BU Loop, ran early with Roach, so that I could take care of some stuff at the trainers before the shindig with the CalTech (one word) track team. Whatever, I would have preferred to eat pasta with the guys at our normal dinners. Feeling ok, not amazing, the knee's still bothersome, but it'll be like that for a good while, I suppose. Felt fast on the strides, think tomorrow will be a good time, need to get Nolan into Div3s. | 3|
| Friday AM: | 20 min in the pool. This is really frustrating me, but I figure I'll be in here for quite awhile still, so I should get used to it. Just have to callous the brain. | 0 |
| Thursday PM: | Fake Fresh Pond Loop. Feeling amazing. Really rushed before practice and didn't stretch out that well, but there was minimal pain in the knee, only 2 or 3 steps that really hurt, and a considerable amount of the time I was running without any pain. Today's got me really excited, things are looking up. If only I felt like this earlier in the week, I could have logged some real mileage. But at least I'm ready to go and it's near the end of the week. | 5 |
| Thursday AM: | 20 min in the pool. I can't wait til this is over. | 0 |
| Wednesday PM: | BU Loop and a warm up loop, then 15 mins on the Angry Zach. Knee was really tender the whole way, a few sharp pains in the back of the knee but nothing as bad as it was on Monday. Didn't feel as good as I did yesterday though. Hopefully it's just a matter of having good days and bad days. The foam roller didn't hurt as much today, I can only hope it's getting better. No stretching with Tom today, maybe tomorrow, but don't want to get it too fired up before the race Saturday. Can only hope this thing is getting better with time. Roach is a dirty, rotten scoundrel, and I'm considering not linking to his log anymore, as his mileage can no longer be trusted. | 5 |
| Wednesday AM: | 20 min in the pool again. Knee was considerably more tender today, could feel it the whole time and when walking to campus. Felt better after some stretching though, hopefully I'll be able to hit the roads this afternoon. This week is getting to be very long. | 0 |
| Tuesday PM: | 2xBU Loop. Stretched out then went, without any prior treatment from Tom. Got in a couple completely pain-free minutes, which was great. Then it started to creep in, maybe just because I was paranoid and paying a lot of attention to the knee. But I got through the whole way without any sharp pains, just an ache in the knee that I can deal with. Got in about 20 solid minutes with minimal pain, 40 minutes total. Afterwards I tacked on another 25 min on the crosstrainer, replicating the track workout the guys were running together. They had 6x4, 6x2, so I went 6x1:00 and 6x:30. Took :30 in between to replicate 100m rest and 5:00 between the two sets. Got churning really well, 300+RPMs for the "deuces." Then Tom stretched me out a bit more, but nothing horrible. Then ultrasound, foam roller and cold whirlpool. Today was a great day. The knee had been really tender today and I wasn't expecting to run at all. I really wanted to, but figured someone would tell me to stay patient, but Tom thought it would be a good idea to try it out. I managed to keep my head out of my knee fairly well, and tried not to get overly excited during the run, but it was so great to be back out on the roads again. I figure I'll need to keep augmenting with pool and crosstrainer to avoid reaggravating it, and don't expect to be completely pain-free until I take some time off after this season. But I can deal with the aching in the knee, probably train with it and definitely race with it. Tom doesn't think racing this weekend will set me back at all, and I don't want to go into DivIIIs not having raced in 3 weeks, so I think we're on. Still need to stay calm and keep on the right track, don't want to get overexcited and start going backwards. Keep doing the small things and taking steps towards healing. | 6 |
| Tuesday AM: | 20 min in the pool. Knee feeling a little tender, not hurting but definitely not well. It was pretty sore last night but it loosened up eventually. I don't know how much longer I can deal with this. | 0/td> |
| Monday PM: | Knee felt great all day, but the hip was tight at times, almost like the IT band was about to cramp up. Went to see Tom before I tried to run, maybe that wasn't such a good idea. He went to town on my hip again, so it was aching before I tried to run. Went BU Bridge Loop, hoping to go 2x. Got a little ways with just some mild aching, then at about 7:30 the first really bad pain in my knee happened, but then it subsided. At 11 minutes in everything was pretty sore, hip, knee, IT band, and pretty much stayed that way. Had to stop and walk for a little while 18 minutes in. Finished up pretty well though. Going to have to run with a certain amount of pain, the only thing is that every once in awhile it feels like my knee is about to give out, which I don't like at all. Only one loop, then 26 mins on the cross trainer. Afterwards Tom stretched me out some more, really just put me in more pain by making my TFL (some small muscle in the hip) angry. Got some ultrasound on that area and the knee, then used the foam roller and got in the cold whirlpool. Knee really stiff at the end of the day. Hopefully this is all helping. | 3 |
| Monday AM: | 20 mins in the pool. Feeling great this morning, not taking a lot of Ibuprofen anymore. No pain on the walk to campus or during the pool work. Hopefully I'll hit the roads this afternoon, finally. | 0 |
| Sunday: | 60 mins on the crosstrainer and 30 mins in the pool. Didn't take any drugs this morning and forgot to stretch beforehand, so the knee was a little sore, but nothing horrible. It was tender the whole day, but I think it's getting better still. Going to keep stretching it today. Probably going to go back on the Ibuprofen, I just forgot this morning. Fox's Daytona preview was on for the second half-hour of cross training, so that helped me get through it. I was kinda surprised I made it the full hour without any breaks. Supposed to cut mileage by 10M this week, so I need to figure out how to run negative miles. | 0 |

| Week 10 2/02-2/08 |
Shit, shit, shit. Prolly the worst "running" week I've ever been through. I've been warned about this I know, before this the longest I've been out is 2 days, so I'm completely unaccustomed to this. Around the middle of the week I didn't think I was going to be able to make it, but then gradual improvement came around, which I guess is all I can really ask for. No miracle cures this time. Watching the meet in jeans with a stopwatch in my hand was a new experience, I think I was only able to get through it because of the slow 5k and what'll happen next week. Gotta get back on the roads. It'll happen soon. February Miles :: 8 | 00 |
| Saturday: | 3x25 mins before the meet. Did 200, 500, 1000 situps after each section. Felt pretty good, didn't take any drugs last night, so I could feel the knee a bit more in the morning, but I stretched it out before going, so I think that helped. Afterwards I found Tom and he cranked on the hip a bit more, there's one knot or something, a pressure point that he just dug his thumb into and went to town. Damn that sucked. But it feels like it's getting a hell of a lot better. Want to be running again by Monday, NEED to be running again on Monday. Took splits for the Greater Boston Championship, highlight of the distance events was Brian Anderson again, winning the mile and the 800. 5k was run by a bunch of chumps, nobody wanted to lead, went through the mile in just under 5:00 before Wildman took over and tried to make it respectable, but the Harvard guys just used him up. Ridiculous. They almost started walking the first 100, three, four wide down the backstretch, bunch of cowards out on the track. Maybe I'm a little bitter I couldn't race. | 0 |
| Friday PM: | 40 minutes (15, 25) on the cross trainer. Spent a lot of time with the trainer today. Running around on the basketball court I couldn't feel the knee anymore, even stretched the stride out and got on my toes. He poked around at a couple knots and yanked my legs around, made me really hurt, but I think it's helping. Ran 6.5 laps around the track too. That was awesome. Had hoped to put in a sold mile, but the knee started getting tight, like it felt last week, so I shut it down. Got in 2 laps without any pain at all. If I had to lace them up tomorrow, I could go, but it's not worth it. The recovery is coming, gotta take baby steps sometimes and make good decisions. Eyes are on next week now. I want to be back up and running by Monday. | 0 |
| Friday AM: | 20 min. in the pool. I'm getting really tired of all this. Knee felt better, got through 15 mins completely pain free, the last 5 weren't that bad. Every once in awhile though there's a shooting pain and I remember that I'm still injured. | 0 |
| Thursday PM: | 4x15 minutes on the cross trainer again. I'm really getting sick of that machine. Stretched out for about 40 minutes beforehand, I hope that's helping. The knee got worse as they day went on, but only to the point where it felt the same as yesterday. Unfortunately the great feeling of this morning wore off through the day. Lifted afterwards. Jogged about 50m on the way to the trainers, I think maybe it started hurting at the end, couldn't really tell. 50m is pretty short anyways. Went full in with the cold whirlpool again, 52 degrees today. I'm hoping that's what was making the knee feel better. Pretty sure Saturday ain't gonna happen. Shit. | 0 |
| Thursday AM: | 25 mins in the pool again. Trying to stay optimistic. Knee actually felt good this morning, couldn't feel it walking to school and the first 12 mins in the pool were pain-free. Maybe the cold whirlpool helped out a whole lot, or maybe I'm so hopped up on Ibuprofen right now I'm not feeling much pain. Either way, it's an improvement. | 0 |
| Wednesday PM: | 4x15 on the Angry Zach again, situps in between. Stretched out for about 40 mins beforehand. Tom wasn't around to talk to though. Knee didn't act up really, but I can still feel it enough to know that I can't run on it yet. This really sucks, I was about to freak out a couple times on the machine, I can't take this much longer. Afterwards I went down to the trainers and sat down in the cold whirlpool, 55 degree water up to my bellybutton. Not bad. | 0 |
| Wednesday AM: | Another 25 minutes in the pool. Hard to tell if the injury is getting better at all. It's not as bad as this weekend, but hasn't progressed at all this week. Maybe a day of complete rest is what is needed. That'll be hard to do, especially since there's no guarantee it will work. And the knee still hurts walking around sometimes, so maybe I'll just have to keep going on it. Not that there's ever a good time to be injured, but this would have been much more convient during IAP when I could have devoted 10+ hours a day to getting healthy, instead of grabbing for the few open hours in my day. At least the work hasn't started yet.... | 0 |
| Tuesday PM: | Tried to warm up for the work out after talking with the trainers. Got only 2 blocks of running in before I had to shut it down. I'm not very happy with this at all. Don't seem to be making any progress. Went back and spent about 45 minutes with Tom learning new stretches for my hamstring and hip flexor. Need to start doing those with regularity. Finally got on the crosstrainer at 7PM, went for an hour. 4x15 minute segments with sit ups in between. Not a workout or anything, I just can't do that machine for a very long time, my mind needs periodic breaks. No pain at all during the cross training though, which has got to be a good sign. Coach said he's not planning on having me race this weekend unless a miracle happens. I don't know what to think. | 0 |
| Tuesday AM: | 25 mins in the pool. Knee was pretty good when I woke up, but started hurting a lot on my walk to campus. Felt pretty good in the pool though, last few minutes hurt a bit more. Wondering when the 600mg of Ibuprofen is going to kick in. Running in the pool ain't so bad, the time passed pretty quickly, but I guess I'm used to passing the time while running 17M, so 25 mins doesn't really register. Just wish I could run. | 0 |
| Monday: | Talked to the trainers today after registering for classes. Tom said it feels like everything in my legs is tight, and there's no clear reason for why my hip and knee have been hurting. There's nothing out of the ordinary though, if there wasn't any pain they'd tell me I was perfectly fine. So I'm going tomorrow to learn a bunch of stretches, which I probably need anyways. I'm going up to 3 Ibuprofen every 6 hours now, that seems like a lot of drugs to me, but hopefully it'll help out. Cross trained for 65 minutes instead of running. Could feel my knee for the beginning, then got in a bunch of relatively painfree time. Right at about 50 minutes it started acting up again, and it was getting bad, so I shut it down a little earlier than I would have liked to. Hopefully will be able to go tomorrow, gonna get in the pool in the morning. | 0 |
| Sunday: | Shit. Tried cross training, but that hurts the knee, so I only did 10 minutes. Tried running in the pool, but the knee hurts then too. Only 11 minutes in the pool. I can't believe what horrible luck I have. I do not need an injury right now, I've got the base and it's time to start sharpening and blazing. I need to run. I need to figure out if it's bad to feel the knee while cross training. I can handle the pain, but don't want to worsen this. The weird part is that it comes and goes. At times I go up and down stairs like an old man (stairs are what hurts it most) and other times I can barely feel it on the stairs. I wish I had some answers. I'm going to the trainers tomorrow, hopefully they'll fix me quickly. GBCs is coming up this weekend, need to get out there with Nolan and lay down a fast time. I can't believe I'm not running today, this doesn't feel right. I can't take this. | 0 |

| Week 09 1/26-2/01 |
Such a worthless week. Started out well though, thought the heel was going to be the biggest problem of the week. Got in good mileage on Sunday, but then work week started up and things went downhill. Blew the workout on Tuesday, that was just hideous. Then things were looking up, started cutting mileage and felt rested, and then the knee starts hurting on Friday at the end of the run, and I can barely do the 2M warm-up before the mile on Saturday. Then I run two horrible races. Wish I had this week to try again. At least I can race on this. February Miles :: 8 | 87 |
| Saturday: | Quad Meet versus Bowdoin, Springfield and Tufts. Knee started hurting during the warm-up for the mile. Trainer said the IT band was tight, so I heated it and tried to get ready for the race. Expected it to start during the race, was paying too much attention to the knee instead of the race. Ran horribly. Iced it and got ready for the 5k. Still hurting during warmup and strides, but not at all during the race. Hurt a lot when I got home, wasn't able to add on to the mileage at all. Very discouraged by today. | 8 |
| Friday PM: | BU Loop. Feeling pretty good, taking it easy, gearing up for tomorrow. The outside of my right knee started aching a little bit, but I think it'll be alright. Stretched out the IT band pretty well and I'll ice it up tonight, hopefully it'll be loose tomorrow. Legs themselves feel great though, light day for work week, get a couple days rest before the term starts up now. January Miles :: 452 | 3 |
| Friday AM: | Science Museum Loop. Feeling pretty good, glad it's Friday. Last day of work week. Feels like the cold whirlpool helped out a bunch yesterday. | 4 |
| Thursday PM: | Castle then out towards Tufts through Summerville. Legs felt like crap, am I glad this day is over. Spent most of the day squatting to drill in screws in our new bar. Quads killing me, I was looking forward to the ice bath the whole run. I've yet to find something as good at getting the lactic acid out of legs as standing in cold water for 12 minutes. Hopefully that, kicking the legs up and some fast strides tomorrow will blast it all out of the legs. Sprint drills and lifting too, I was way too tired today. | 8 |
| Thursday AM: | Science Museum. Same old, same old. Heel took awhile to loosen up, that's about it. Legs are pretty tired, but HR was 43BPM last night, so at least that's going alright. Gonna jump in an ice bath today. | 4 |
| Wednesday PM: | Reservoir with Summit Ave add-on. Hammering from the gun, moving at a pretty good clip the whole time, honest pace. Light snow falling, made for interesting footing at times. Could have used some Roach ski shoes on my way down Summit Ave. Quads pretty tired, but not a big deal, managed to stay rolling the whole way. Nolan stayed behind to talk to the doc, no new leads though. Nothing really amazing happened, nice and warm out though, mid 20s or so. | 10 |
| Wednesday AM: | Science Museum. Speed kills. I was exhausted when I woke up this morning, after 9+ hours. HR was 45, expected it to be 47-48, so I'm happy. Took a little while for the heel to loosen up, but otherwise, it was a good run, stretched out the legs. | 4 |
| Tuesday PM: | 6x800 2:16, 15, 17, 18, 21, 20 (window 2:14), 6x400 66, 65, 67, 68, 67, 67 (63), 6x200 29, 31, 31, 29, 31, 30 (31). Nolan had to quit after the second 800 because his foot was hurting too much to take the turns. That kinda freaked me out and I overcompensated by running 31 for the first 200m of the next 800. It was downhill from there, I couldn't stay calm during the intervals, I'd get out then slow way down. Not cool. I managed to get going on the deuces, but deuces are crap. Coach wasn't as concerned, because it was a long workout, tough to do alone, and I did manage to show some speed at the end. I was very upset with the workout, feel like I blew a chance to get in a very solid workout. My legs weren't there and when Nolan left my head went out the window. I think it was partly my body telling me to back off, so I only went 2M on the cooldown, instead of 5M. And I'm gonna start backing the mileage down, these 100M weeks are probably a thing of the past, too mcuh stuff going on with work week and then school starting up. IAP was good while it lasted though, and it's not like 90MPW is very light. This may have been a blessing in disguise, there are many mild aches and pains building up that I should listen too. It's time to be smart, look at what's coming and listen to my body. The HR has been gradually climbing too. I just wish the blessing didn't have to ruin the workout. | 9 |
| Tuesday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Feeling pretty good after almost 9 hours sleep, need to stay on top of that this week. Hard to believe classes are starting exactly one week from today. Heel started hurting about 3 blocks in and got pretty bad, but loosened up by the end of the run. It was the first time with the pads in the AM shoes, hopefully that's all it was. Need to be able to run this workout. | 5 |
| Monday PM: | Fresh Pond around the Pond. Wasn't really sure how to approach today, since there's a killer workout on the docket for tomorrow, but eventually just started trucking. Started to go once, then had second thoughts and backed off for a little while. Right after JFK Street I latched onto this biker and trailed him for about half a mile, using him as a rabbit. He kept turning around to look at me, since I was sitting 2m off his back tire, it was fairly humorous. He turned off and I kept at it, never really cut completely loose though. Good news is that I barely felt the heel at all, bad news is that I could feel the tendon running along the bottom of my foot. I don't know what that means. Nevertheless, I-Squared continues... Saw the Tufts crew again, right by the Shell station. Going head to head with them this weekend. | 10 |
| Monday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Feeling amazing today, after 8.5 hours sleep. Heel started hurting somewhat, but not as badly as it was yesterday, and it took a block or two to really start acting up. Keeping up on the I-Squared treatment. Work week isn't taking it out of me too much yet, but I need to stay on top of the sleep. Going to get my ass kicked by this track workout tomorrow. | 5 |
| Sunday: | Science Museum-Watertown Loop. Heel hurting at the start, but that loosened up by the time I hit Science Museum. Not as quick on the Cambridge side this time, crossed over between 67 and 68 minutes, instead of 64-65, but managed to hammer all the way home and hit 110 even along the Esplanade. Really trucking from the BU Bridge onwards, relaxed and just eating up ground. I think I was a little afraid that the heel would act up so I kept it cool for awhile, but it wasn't a problem at all. Had to use the poorman's outhouse by Eliot on the way back, not that big of a deal. Had to go early (out the door at 7AM) to get back in time for work week. | 17 |

Great week, could have ended a bit better but I'll take it. Had the fastest time in the Region for a few hours until Emord went 14:56 at BU and Bak went 14:18.9. What a workout on Tuesday though. I was completely trashed after that, but stayed in control and really took over that workout. Good mileage week too, Coach wanted it backed down a bit, gearing up for Williams, which I understand, but still managed to get them in. Took the cold well too, that spell is over now, back to tropical 20 and 30 degree weather. January Miles :: 373 | 101 |
| Saturday: | Quad Meet vs. Williams, RPI and Westfield State. Ran the 5k, 15:00.96 for the win. Not a bad run, got a little lost in the middle, started hammering again with 12 laps to go and opened up a big gap on Holtshutle, he's the only guy I didn't lap. Need to get a little more focused in the middle and get out a little quicker (went 72/2:26) and things will fall into place. Went around Fresh Pond with Nolan afterwards, just logging miles, not flying or anything. A bit of an upset stomach, but nothing horrible. Couldn't feel the heel really, only when walking. Staying on top of that though. | 15 |
| Friday PM: | Ran BU-Harvard Loop, taking it really easy with the whole group. Nice and relaxed, meet warm up. Focusing on tomorrow. Saw the trainers beforehand about the heel. It's probably a bruise, either on the bone or on the soft tissue around there. Coach says it could be plantar fascitis, but the trainers say it's not. Either way, it's the I-Squared treatment for at least a solid week. | 3 |
| Friday AM: | Tried to go at 10AM, but my right heel hurt too much to run on. It's been hurting off and on when walking around for a few days now. Came home and took some Ibuprofen, waited an hour and a half and went again. Able to do the whole Longfellow-BU Loop without it hurting. Going to talk to the trainers before practice though. Hit it with the I-Squared treatment, I ain't afraid of this. | 5 |
| Thursday PM: | Jamaica Pond, twice around the pond. Running with Nolan all the way, staying calm but still respectable pace. Legs feel good, feel fresh. Starting to focus in on this weekend's meet. Need to drop a fast time. Work week is coming soon though, need to start sleeping as much as possible. Hard to believe that IAP is coming to an end already. Hurdles and lifting today. Hurdles felt a little awkward, cut them short. | 10 |
| Thursday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Ran early. | 5 |
| Wednesday PM: | Reservoir with Summit Ave add on. A little cold out today, but nice once out of the wind. Really icy around the Reservoir, can't really run too fast on that stuff. On the way back Nolan and I got clipping really nicely. Kinda wish I had worn two long sleeves, but still no need for pants yet. Maybe we'll get some weather and I'll break them out. | 10 |
| Wednesday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Feeling pretty good, legs tired from yesterday. The stomach ache prevented an adequate cool down, I'll kick the legs up after breakfast. I was starving all run, because the stomach ache also prevented an adequate dinner. | 5 |
| Tuesday PM: | 6x8 2:16, 16, 16, 16, 15, 15 (window 2:16), 4x4 64, 3, 4, 4 (64). Really felt strong, really grooving today, running up front with Nolan. Took over at the end of the 8s, he was a second or two off on the last 2. I think I pissed him off a little bit by talking a couple times throughout the workout. It really wasn't that big of deal until I started joking around. Great workout but by no means devastating. Threw on a Fake Fresh afterwards to make it a real mileage day, right around 20 minutes in the legs started turning to stone. Mild stomachache all day, got much worse after the cool down, didn't bother me at all during the workout. Felt like I was going to throw up a couple times, didn't eat much at all for dinner. Took a 5 hour nap afterwards and slept it off. During the middle of the nap, BOTH my hamstrings cramped at the same time, just like last year (Tuesday.) Feeling really confident after this workout. Time to start racing well. | 11 |
| Tuesday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Still feeling good. Wind is still there, really bad going north, but nothing horrible. Definitely not pants weather yet. Excited about the workout. | 5 |
| Monday PM: | Fresh Pond around the Pond. Ran basically alone today, there was a pretty bad wind at the start, don't know if guys didn't want to fight it, or if they were saving up for the workout tomorrow, or what, but after the first mile or so I was running alone. Just started grooving, got running pretty fast but it felt really easy. Not fighting myself at all, just letting it happen. Feeling really good today. | 10 |
| Monday AM: | Longfellow-BU after I took Kathryn to the airport. Feeling good, legs nice and loose. We're on the track tomorrow, and coach wants us to cut our mileage by 5M this week, so I'll keep it in the 100-105M range, and definitely won't run 93M in the first 6 days of the week. | 5 |
| Sunday: | Science Museum-Watertown Bridge Loop. Feeling pretty good, legs fresh for the start, didn't have a lot left at the end though, but that's fine. Felt like I was rolling pretty well on the Cambridge side, but was just as fast as last week when I crossed the Watertown bridge. Saw a 4 man crew out of Tufts running along the river by Eliot. Last week I was able to get rolling from about Anderson bridge, but not this time. Legs sore and wouldn't turn over. Bit it right before the Weeks footbridge on a big patch of ice. That's the second most treacherous part of the Esplanade, in my opinion, behind only the "D" Bridge underneath the BU Bridge (D for death.) All in all a good day, logged plenty of miles and averaged just under 6:25s (109 min for the 17.1M along the Esplanade.) Haven't seen the plan for this coming week yet, but it'll be another one of high mileage. | 17 |

| Week 07 1/12-1/18 |
Not such an amazing week. Workout on Monday was awful, Wednesday merely confirmed my belief that there's no speed in the legs yet. Saturday could have saved the week but I didn't race too well, wasn't calm and confident and didn't get out in the 15. Need to change the mindset in those races, need to work on that. Hopefully the speed shows up soon. January Miles :: 272 | 101 |
| Saturday: | Meet versus USCGA and Bates @ USCGA. Raced the 1500 and the 1000, got taken off the 4x800 when coach scratched the 4x400. Could have raced better, had an awful 15, still running like it's a distance race. 1000 was better, hammered and lead from the gun, but got passed by 4 guys over the last 200m as my confidence disappeared. Logged some extra miles around the campus after that, got back too late to consider adding on, too tired as well. More of a speed workout, low mileage day. I'll get back at it tomorrow. | 8 |
| Friday PM: | BU-Science Loop. Feeling good, legs are fresh. Need to stay calm tomorrow though, lots of races and I'm in an excitable mood. Kept it nice and easy today, running with Nolan. No knee problems, that's all loosened up and fine. Couple random aches and pains, but that comes with the territory and doesn't bother me when I'm running. Really nothing of any import happened. | 6 |
| Friday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Feeling alright. Smacked my knee into the corner of a table last night, took awhile to loosen it up, don't think it's anything worse than a bruise though. HR 41BPM overnight, slept 10 hours. | 5 |
| Thursday PM: | Fresh Pond around the pond plus a warm up loop. Feeling pretty good, got cruising a little ways into it. Didn't want it to turn into a death march, but wasn't about to sacrifice a day just because there's a meet in two days. Kept it honest, and the warm up loop made the mileage respectable. I'm feeling really strong right now, I think I'm in better shape than I was at the start of cross, going to try a few things different for indoors to keep that feeling going. Legs were pretty tired on hurdle drills, need to do more of those, I'm still really bad at them. | 12 |
| Thursday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Thought about bumping up to Science Museum-BU, but I'll just add on at the end of tonight's run. Feeling good, no ill effects from yesterday's debacle. HR 42BPM overnight. Lost $6 last night, didn't get a single good hand. My life is so rough. | 5 |
| Wednesday PM: | 8x(1:45 on, 1:45 off) Supposed to emulate a 600m workout, work on speed. Definitely didn't bring the speed today though. Absolutely no turnover, zero. Ran Jamaica Pond Loop and added on a warmup loop. Wanted to go with 2 warmup loops but the stomach nixed that idea. Not a big loss. Definitely have no speed in the legs. Finished the workout and the legs were not tired, not by a longshot, but I had no get up, especially over the last ones. Neuromuscularly, I just couldn't go. Wasn't out of breath, cardiorespiratorially I was fine, my legs just would not turnover. Stayed calm, arms and shoulders relaxed, trying to just let it flow and let the speed come, but there was none to be had. Disappointing workout, although it's to be expected on 100+ mile weeks. If you ask me, we should be on the track more. | 10 |
| Wednesday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Quads sore this morning, but mainly just when I'm walking around, not really during the run. Probably from moving up in squats. Otherwise feeling fine. | 5 |
| Tuesday PM: | Docks plus a Science Museum Loop. Got a little crazy today, hauling sub-6s for awhile near the end of the Docks loop, but I backed off realizing that I still had 4M to go. Wildman sprinted the last mile though, we were really hauling from a long way out. Nolan was on the Angry Zach again today though, that sucks, maybe he would have brought some caution and reason to the run. Turned into one big race today. I don't have a problem with that though, as long as it doesn't happen every day. Nice long run, averaged under 6:15s for the whole way, obviously. Had a meeting with Coach beforehand, laid out season goals, it's all about staying calm, being confident and running fast. Fifty miles in three days, BIGGITY-BAM! Who needs EPO when you've got IAP? | 12 |
| Tuesday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. A little cold out, but nothing horrible. Legs really tired when I woke up, but didn't feel that bad during the run. Just logging miles, I guess. Won $12.70 last night. | 5 |
| Monday PM: | 4x(4:00 hard, 4:00 easy) Supposed to be running 4:45-5:05 pace on the efforts, not sure how fast I was going, didn't feel that fast. Nolan took a day off for his foot, so I was running alone and my head wasn't in it. Had a pretty bad workout. #3 was horrible, hardly moving at all, not focused. Managed to bust it on the last one though, but that's nothing special. Everybody can run fast on the last one. Arsenal Loop with an Infinite Loop add on to bump the mileage up. | 11 |
| Monday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Feeling pretty good, running at a pretty fast clip. Running into the wind on Cambridge side. HR was 42BPM last night. | 5 |
| Sunday: | Science Museum-Watertown Bridge Loop. Solid run early in the day, feels good to get the run taken care of. Legs feeling pretty good, not hammering at first, just running a steady pace and stretching them out. Still a little sore from yesterday. Running into a wind on the Cambridge side of the river was less than fun, and occasional icy patches slowed the pace down from time to time. Once across Watertown Bridge though I started booking it. Legs started to loosen up and it just flowed, so I keep rolling. Total time along the Esplanade (17.1M) was 1:46:30, approx. 6:15s a mile, due in large part to trucking on the way home. Needed ice skates down by Eliot Street Bridge on the Boston side, that sucked, otherwise good. Fairly warm on the way back with the sun on my face. HR was 44BPM last night, but only slept about 8 hours so I could get up early and run then watch Yuval race at BU, maybe I'll take a nap today. | 17 |

| Week 06 12/05-1/11 |
Good week of solid mileage. Started out with a big day, yeah it was broken up into two runs, but still, logging 20M in one day is an accomplishment. Now to start working towards putting it all in one run... Rest of the week featured solid training, kick-ass workouts on Monday and Wednesday, hampered slightly by less than ideal conditions on the roads, but what can you do? Tuesday was a good hard distance run and Thursday and Friday rested up for the weekend well. Would have liked to have performed a little better on Saturday, should have won the 3k, but that's my own fault. January Miles :: 171 | 105 |
| Saturday: | Brandeis Invite. 2nd the 3k and third in 4x800 on "B" squad. Satisfied with performances, should have been quicker though. Good to be back racing. Went Fresh Pond around the Pond with Nolan when we got back to round out the mileage and make today respectable. Legs felt pretty good, really strong during the 3k but lacking speed, couldn't hold 2:00 pace in the half. Good day. | 16 |
| Friday PM: | BU-Science Museum Loop. Taking it easy to rest up for tomorrow. Sometimes taking it easy makes the legs feel uncomfortable though, overly tired. Maybe I've just been sleeping too much though. Feel ready for tomorrow, it'll give me a good chance to run fast again, it's been awhile, too long. Got Running With The Buffaloes and Without Limits in the mail today, that'll help pass the next two weeks. HR Monitor got here today too, need to keep track of that closely too, but I strapped it on midday and the HR was down around 49 in :45, so I'm not too concerned that I'm overtraining. | 6 |
| Friday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Ran late again because I couldn't get out of bed until 11AM again. Not a big deal, needed to rest up for Sat. anyways. Feeling alright, legs a little tired but maybe that's just from sleeping a lot. Mileage progressing well. | 5 |
| Thursday PM: | Reservoir with Summit Ave add on. Mainly just taking it easy, relaxing, but Nolan and I got moving near the end of the run. Nothing killer, just that point beyond comfort where you could run for miles. Legs feeling really strong, just coasting through the run. Felt fast on strides at the end. A little icy around the Reservoir, but the sidewalks are clear. Been fairly warm the last two days. Did some hurdle work after the run, focused on increasing the hip flexibility. | 10 |
| Thursday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Ran at 11AM because I wound up sleeping in. Got ~11 hours last night, I hadn't realized I was that tired. Felt fine on the run, typical, uninteresting AM run. It's fairly warm outside. | 5 |
| Wednesday PM: | 7x(2:00 fast, 2:00 recovery.) Went around Jamaica Pond then added on a warm-up loop backwards. Feeling pretty good, got moving really well on the middle ones with Nolan. The first couple I ran away from Nolan, moreso because he wasn't focused than I was running faster. Then he got his head in it and we started smashing. The final couple were icy with traffic interruptions and prevented finishing the workout as hard as I would have liked, but on the whole a very solid workout. Luckily it warmed up and the roads were clear, we were pretty close to doing a track workout. | 10 |
| Wednesday AM: | Longfellow-BU Loop. Managed to get out the door early today, no waiting around. Felt good, but there was about half an inch of new snow that made for slow going most of the way. | 5 |
| Tuesday PM: | Fresh Pond around the Pond. Feeling really, really good and got flying, as much as possible given the sometimes crappy conditions on the roads. The path around the Pond was surprisingly steady, enough sand to provide traction. Caught a couple of red lights, near the end, but got flying really well down Mass Ave, finished strong. Started a more rigorous lifting program today. | 10 |
| Tuesday AM: | Typical AM run. Science Museum Loop again. Think I'll bump the mileage up to 5M in the AM soon, need to get out on the road earlier. Ankle a little sore at the start, but loosened up quickly and no problem, most likely just sore from running on the uneven ice. | 4 |
| Monday PM: | 4x(5:00 hard, 5:00 recovery.) Supposed to be at 8k race pace, just like the last two weeks, but the ground was snow covered and icy, so parts were pretty tough to run fast on. Especially the third interval, between Arsenal and Elliot on Boston side, the path wasn't plowed, so we were on the side of the road, kicking up wet slush, hammies and quads cold then. In general a strong workout though, good to be back smashing with the guys again, managed to run away from Nolan a little at the end of the intervals. Looks like this IAP could be pretty productive. | 10 |
| Monday AM: | Science Museum Loop. Pretty standard AM run, took awhile to get out the door, but no problems after that. Esplanade sucks at points on that loop, hope it doesn't interfere with the workout today. | 4 |
| Sunday PM: | Fresh Pond (w/o Pond) from home. Got in around 7:30 after a long day of travel. Flight from Pittsburgh to Boston got delayed 30 minutes for de-icing, then it took a long time to get the luggage off the plane, so I wound up running a lot later than I expected. Got out the door after the Giants-49ers ended, just after 8PM. Conditions were a study in contrasts, icy with poor footing, slippery slight covering of snow on the sidewalk made it difficult at times, each step would slip back. Almost bit it near Harvard Square, after enjoying a long stretch of solid footing. Not a very exciting run, got moving pretty quickly near the end, not that tired. HR was at 40BPM this morning. | 10 |
| Sunday AM: | Part One of today, which is unfortunately broken up due to travel. Woke up after 4.5 hours of sleep to finish packing log some miles. Bender Loop in almost an inch of snow. Not a big deal, able to run in roads for part of the time, and sidewalks weren't a problem either. Good packing snow, so not slippery at all, lots of purchase. Trugging along pretty uneventfully the whole way, but dropped in a 6:00 last mile (3:05/2:55) to bring TRT just under 65 minutes, so the 6:00 was the exception today, not the rule. Got a midday trip back to Boston, flying through Pittsburgh and getting home around 5:30, so I'll finish up the rest of today's mileage tonight. | 10 |

| Week 05 12/29-1/04 |
Solid week of mileage. Great workout on Monday but a little tired on Thursdays. The long run on Tuesday left me pretty wasted, but I started out the new month pretty well. Will be going back to MIT and having nothing but running on the docket throughout the entirity of January, so that'll hopefully lead to some fast times. Satisfied with my fitness right now, but still want to know what I'm capable of on the track, and that starts in a week. January Miles : 56 | 100 |
| Saturday: | North along Lake to Klode, then Art Museum Loop. Feeling alright, pretty much just phoning this one in, didn't kill myself but kept it honest to a certain extent. Dropped to 6:40 for a little while in the middle of the run, averaged 6:30 throughout, so I'd guess I was fluctuating between 6:20 and 6:40. A little stomachache but nothing at all like yesterdays, didn't upset the run at all, I figure it was because I had been snacking throughout the whole day before finally getting off my lazy ass to run. Legs a little tired. Got a HR Monitor that I wear when I sleep now to track my resting HR, averaged 44BPM last night, but I might be putting too much emphasis on it, because I had a dream I woke up to find my average resting HR to be in the 70s. What a nightmare. | 14 |
| Friday PM: | Ran Bender Loop really late, around 11:30PM, after the Bucks game was over and the National Championship game ended. First 6+M were pretty good, clipping along solidly, but not smashing. As I was about to pick it up over the last 3M I began suffering from the world's worst stomachache, and it only got worse. The Eddy's I ate 5 hours earlier was debating over which way it wanted to leave my body, as a result I had horrible pains in my stomach and had to stop to walk twice. Hit struggle-cat mode really bad at the end, the unofficial split on the last mile was 7:30. Disappointed, because I was feeling good otherwise and set up to smash the last couple well. Instead, I had the least fun on a run that I've had since, well, a long time ago. At least I got the mileage in. | 10 |
| Friday AM: | Standard morning run. Only got 7 hours last night, pretty tired, legs stiff and sore. Not flying, just another run. | 4 |
| Thursday PM: | Nice and relaxing down Lake Drive. Typical "morning run," just stretching the legs out, don't even notice the mileage really. Legs feel a little better, not so tired. Guess I should put down the Resolutions, seeing as how it's the 2nd day of the new year already.
1) Increase hip flexibility 2) MORE MILES That pretty much sums it up. |

| Thursday AM: | 6x(2:20 fast, 2:00 recovery) with End along the Bender Loop. Legs feeling pretty tired from the start, at times I was flying and other times I was tying up bad. Managed to make it through alive though, legs are barely staying together, still pretty tired, although I slept 8 hours last night. Not an amazing workout by any stretch, but I feel like it helped somewhat. Hopefully the legs will be feeling better for the afternoon miles. | 10 |
| Wednesday PM: | Managed to get out the door and log the Bender Loop around 5PM. Still feeling really tired, not sleepy, just wasted. Legs heavy and tired, not sore in any specific place, just sore all around and not willing to turnover, and I wasn't willing to force them too, didn't want to hurt that much. Managed to turn the last mile in 6:20, held sub 6:30s for the last couple. Don't know why I'm feeling so tired and rundown, hopefully I'll get over it. | 10 |
| Wednesday AM: | Ran 4M along Lake Drive during halftime of the Outback Bowl. Had planned on going 8M this morning and 10M this afternoon, but the long day yesterday took more out of me than I expected it to. Slept 10+ hours, and still wasted. Really dragging, running slow and form felt out of whack the entire time. | 4 |
| Tuesday: | Lazy day of lying around again, finally got up and ran at 5:30. Tried to do the normal route along Lake Drive, but the village of Fox Point doesn't employ streetlights, so I couldn't see the sidewalk and turned around after 4M. So I added on another 8M by running Art Museum. Near the end of the run my right quad starting getting tight, maybe it was just the cold, but it didn't feel like it. I'll stretch it out a little more and it'll be fine. Felt pretty good otherwise. Didn't really hammer, but held sub 6:30s consistently, so moving pretty well. Fairly satisfied with the run, a good end to the month. Nothing remarkable is happening. December Miles : 388 | 16 |
| Monday PM: | Ran North along Lake Drive after 3 hours in the car. Felt good to stretch the legs out. Temps in the low 50s, went shirtless. | 4 |
| Monday AM: | 4x(5:00 at 8k race pace, 4:00 recovery) Ran out and back along Hwy E, yet again. Feeling really good, managed to hold essentially 5:00 pace on the hard efforts, the recovery wasn't as fast as I would have liked, but keeping it down to 4:00 instead of 5:00 helped out, got the legs good and tired. A solid, solid workout. Everyday I'm feeling more and more confident in my fitness and my legs. Feel ready to roll, as I keep saying over and over. The last couple miles had a bit of an upset stomach, but that's not a big deal and didn't affect the workout or the cooldown. Weather was beautiful out, misty and foggy but warm, went without hat or gloves and still sweated my ass off. Felt more like running in October than the end of December. | 10 |
| Sunday: | Same route as yesterday. Roads were frozen over in the morning but melted away by early afternoon. Didn't feel very loose at the start, form felt jerky and out-of-sync, but it must have been all in my head, because I hit 7M in 43:20. I had loosened up by the turnaround point though, things were flowing well, but the miles weren't slipping away by any stretch. Still, ran 42:26 over the last 7M, so about 6:04 average, with the last 2M taking just 12:00, even though the last mile is by no means quick. Becoming more and more confident in the fitness everyday, but can't shake the feeling that I was in better shape in August than I am right now, maybe it's just attitude, I'm less fired up right now, but whatever it is it's discouraging. Hopefully I'll drop a fast time as soon as I get back in Boston and won't have to worry anymore. But the way things are set up right now, this could wind up being a very disappointing season. | 14 |

| Week 04 12/22-12/29 |
An interesting week of running. 2 solid workouts, but nothing that's lighting the world on fire, need to get back to MIT and run with Nolan, End wasn't cutting it on Thursday (sorry Nick.) Outside of that, I need to work on getting out for the AM runs, even though I don't feel up to it in the morning. Runs kept getting pushed back too late. Solid mileage turned in though, good long days on Sunday and Saturday, don't feel as concerned about my fitness as I had. Want to get back to Boston and get to racing. December Miles : 344 | 98 |
| Saturday: | Out and back along County Hwy E again. Pretty standard route while up here. Laid around all day after 10+ hours of sleep and a nap yesterday. Feeling pretty good, trucking at about 6:20s I'd guess. TRT of 88 minutes, 44 out 44 back. Snowed early but sun came out and melted virtually everything, roads starting to ice up a little bit near the end. Really warm on the way out, running east, but coming back into the wind wasn't as nice, and the last 3.5M were into a vicious fog with about quarter mile visibility. Luckily very few people are up here, and fewer still drive on Hwy E, so no traffic problems. There are plenty of snowmobile trails around here, barring more snow I may check those out tomorrow, especially if the roads are iced over. Get back to cross a little bit. | 14 |
| Friday PM: | Out and back along County Hwy E in Door County. Feeling really good, run was easy, little effort, seemed to fly by as well. Don't know why I kept it at 8M, guess I just wasn't that excited about it. Pretty tired, didn't sleep a lot last night, but managed to grab an hour in the car on the way up. Anyways, looking forward to sleeping tonight. | 8 |
| Friday AM: | Finally getting around to some real AM runs. Easy 5M along Lake before leaving for Door County. Log won't be updated again until 12/30. Looking forward to it, need to start sleeping more. | 5 |
| Thursday PM: | A painful run after a big dinner of hamburgers, chips, beans and soda. Four miles on that equals four miles with a stomach ache, and about 20 minutes to recover afterwards. But I got the miles in. | 4 |
| Thursday AM: | 6x(2:20 hard, 2:00 recovery) with End. Ran the Bender Loop with a quick pit stop at End's house before we started the fartlek. Feeling alright, not an amazing workout. Legs didn't feel like they had a lot of speed in them, form felt awkward near the end of each interval, couldn't get satisfactory turnover going. Still, legs got tired by the end, so a useful workout if nothing else. Finished up with 3M, turned last mile of 6:00. Going to take the rest of the day easy, turn in 4 or 5 this afternoon. I'm now 20 years old. I need to accomplish something with my life. | 10 |
| Late Wednesday: | I need to stop being so lazy and start the morning runs already. Ran at 10:30PM, this is getting a little ridiculous. Wound up winning a total of $11 from the $141 invested in the PowerBall lottery, alas the $314 million jackpot eluded me. Legs felt pretty good, last mile was uncomfortable as Christmas dinner was threatening to come back up. Managed to get through though. Workout tomorrow. | 8 |
| Wednesday: | Easy run along Lake Drive. Lazy day of lying around reading, should have run when I woke up. Guess I'll have to go out again later, burn off the big Christmas dinner. Things are going pretty well for me. | 5 |
| Tuesday PM: | Bender Loop. Feeling pretty good, just logging miles though, not overly excited about running today. Managed to run 66 flat for the loop though, which is good, given my lack of effort. Finished up strong with a 6:16 (3:10/3:06) without pushing at all. I have 10% of 141 PowerBall tickets, the jackpot of which stands at $280 million, drawing tomorrow. | 10 |
| Tuesday AM: | miles | 4 |
| Late Monday: | Ran at halftime of the MNF Game (Bucs are getting stomped!) Pretty standard, simple run, nothing exciting. Except I have a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell. | 4 |
| Monday: | Pretty good run but a pretty bad day. Really lazy today, woke up early to run but was tired, and instead of going back to sleep for awhile, I wound up eating a big breakfast then lying around and playing some Sega (not NHLPA '93 like over the summer, I played some KLAX this morning, good puzzle game) and watching TV. Then wound up taking a nap and not running until 6PM. In any event, the run was pretty solid, nothing amazing though. Ran 4x5:00 at 8k race pace and took 5:00 recovery this time. Felt really strong and fresh, able to push myself a lot better this time. The last interval matched up perfectly with mile markers, so I know it was about a 5:07, I got out well with a 2:31 half but lost a little focus near the end. Used the poor man's outhouse on the Palisades, not the first time Mr. J's move has saved me, then finished up with 2 6:30 miles. Really short day, the plan is to get back out and tack on some more after dinner. Saw the illustrious Jonas Berge of 2000 WIAA Division II State Cross Country Championship Shorewood Greyhound fame, he's got quite the beard, looks like the kind of guy who eats gophers for breakfast. I hear he's only running recreationally now. | 10 |
| Sunday: | Standard out back along Lake and Santa Monica. Hit the first half in 50 minutes, feeling pretty good. Legs got a little shaky around 34 minutes, but able to hold on pretty well. Took a little break to stretch out and got back at it. Near 12M started to hit the wall fairly hard, had been holding sub 6:15s pretty consistently though. Luckily I spied a Port-A-John down a side street and took a much needed break there. Much easier after that, partly from using the bathroom and partly from just taking a break for a minute. Held pretty consistent over the final 3M, hit 6:10 (3:10/3:00) over the last mile. Finished up in 99 minutes, so split 50:00/49:00. Feeling more confident about my fitness level, looking forward to coming back to New England and getting racy. | 16 |

Running took a backseat to finals this week, managed to get the mileage up, but feel pretty rundown, missed a couple morning runs and had a tough time travelling early in the AM on Friday. Still, legs feel like they're coming around, maybe my fitness isn't as poor as I thought. Good to wrapped up and done with another term, now I'm launching into a monthlong stretch of straight running, hopefully pop it up to 100+M and get in decent shape. December Miles : 246 | 93 |
| Saturday: | Art Museum then north along Lake Drive for 2M. Not the best day for running, I suppose. Woke up early to run but was really tired and couldn't get myself out the door, ate a lot for breakfast and didn't feel like trying to run on such a full stomach. Took a nap around midday and finally got myself out the door by 5:30, but I was really tired and not excited at all. Planned on logging 14M today, but decided it would be smart to turn around a little early, due to bathroom considerations. Finished up pretty slow, but had gotten off to a respectable start, running 6:20s for most of the miles. | 12 |
| Friday PM: | Bender Loop. After a two hour nap I'm feeling a little more rested. It really sucks that I'm used to running on this little sleep, but what you gonna do? Was snowing a little bit, pretty much stopped by the time I started running, but the sidewalks were slick at times. Ran in the road as much as possible, but just not feasible over the last 3M. Averaged about 6:30s, pretty respectable since I wasn't really focusing on pace at all, just logging the miles. Covered the last mile (4676 to Atwater) in 5:50 without straining at all, really felt like I was jogging. Legs are still kinda tired, but feel like they've readjusted to high mileage. Hopefully I'll be able to sleep sometime. | 10 |
| Friday AM: | Nice run along the Lakefront, good to be home. Slept from 3:50 until 4:20, got in a taxi and went to the airport. Sitting behind a screaming baby, but managed to grab another hour's sleep on the plane. Got home at 9:00 and hit the pavement. Really tired, going to take a nap. | 4 |
| Thursday: | 7x2:20 with 2:00 rest. Ran Arsenal to Longfellow, waited about 20 minutes before starting, went about 25 minutes afterwards. Feeling pretty good out there, definitely put in a good workout. I'm better at running these shorter workouts by myself than I am with the longer ones like Monday's. Had planned on doing an AM run, but slept through the alarm and woke up at 8:10 for my 9:00 final exam, so the run got nixed. Finished up finals today, it's nice to have that off my back. Now don't have to worry about school for 5 or 6 weeks, just going to putting in the miles. Last run in Boston for a couple weeks, going home ass early tomorrow. But first, LOTR: The Two Towers tonight. | 12 |
| Wednesday PM: | BC without the Reservoir from home. Feeling pretty good, didn't hammer like yesterday though. I think this week is starting to catch up with me. Need to bust out one more night though, then it's all over. Route wound up shorter than I expected it to, but that's alright, I'll still easily hit mid90s this week. Saw McFly and Dr. Junk at BU Bridge, they were going to Jamaica. Also saw the smallest dog on the planet, this thing was seriously a burrito with legs, wearing a jacket. | 9 |
| Wednesday AM: | Science Museum. Pretty standard AM run, thinking about the two exams I got coming up tomorrow, that'll be rough but then this term will be behind me, so it's all good. Legs felt good at the start, then got a little tired, but 4M is too short for me to really notice, it was over really quick. | 4 |
| Tuesday: | Longfellow->Arsenal. Had an 18.06 Exam this morning so I skipped the AM and put in a longer run in the afternoon. Feeling really good, so I pushed the pace somewhat. Ran easy from home to Harvard Bridge, about 18 minutes, then started hammering. Hit Arsenal at about 45, predicted a TRT (Total Running Time) of 78. Went door to door in 78:03. 74:00 along the Esplanade (11.7M), so about 6:20s. Probably dropped down to 6:00-6:15s for the last 10M. Finally running like I was over the summer, feel good about that. Another couple of weeks like this and I'll be right where I want to be. Knee was really stiff this morning, but it loosened up quickly after I walked around a little bit, not a problem at all during the run. | 12 |
| Monday PM: | 4x5:00 at 5M race pace, supposedly. Took 4:00 rest between, kept the rest pace quick. Ran Eliot to Science Museum starting from home. Doubtful that I was running as fast as I should have been on these, it's hard for me to push myself when I'm doing long tempo runs alone, but that's something I really need to work on, because I feel like that directly correlates to running from the front of races, which is also something I want to work on. Legs feel great, not at all tired anymore, which is weird since I'm not sleeping as much now that I'm going full out with studying. Maybe I was sleeping too much.... Scraped the side of my knee on the grill of a car as I was crossing the street, not a big deal, just a little blood. After I took a pit stop at E51 after my last interval, it tightened up a little, but loosened right up after a minute or two. Other than that, not much news. | 10 |
| Monday AM: | Longfellow to BU. Standard AM run, I suppose, feeling really good, not tired at all like I was yesterday. Just relaxed and having a good time. Snowing and windy at the start, quads tightened up a little but nothing horrible. Naturally, I was the only guy on my Esplanade. | 5 |
| Sunday: | Fresh Pond around the Pond and down to Science Museum on the way back. Not a very good run, legs worn down, tired early on. Was hungry too. Looking back at the summer log and I don't think I could do some of the runs I did then anymore, which isn't getting me excited. Need these next few weeks to hammer out some long runs and re-establish a solid base, then keep it up throughout the season. I feel like I got away from hard long runs during cross, and that's something I want to get back to doing during indoors. Weather was nice, low 40s, enough for just a short sleeve T. Watched "The Junction Boys" on ESPN last night, pretty good movie. Now, I've got to study. | 15 |

Not such a good week, missed a couple AM runs early, didn't ever really go long, had some half-assed workouts alone. Need to pick it up if anything's going to happen this season. Don't feel as confident about my fitness as I did at the start of cross. Hopefully it's just that I'm rundown because of the end of the term and it'll pick up through IAP. Looking at a couple weeks of straight high mileage weeks. December Miles : 153 | 86 |
| Saturday: | 5k at Alumni in 15:31, second to Nolan by 0:10. Afterwards caught 10M around Fresh Pond with Nolan through the rain. Picked it up over the second half, feeling good. Dropped the hammer and left Nolan, trying to get back to the way I was running over the summer. Didn't run very fast during the race though, don't exactly know why. More detail in the Races section. | 15 |
| Friday PM: | Fake Fresh Pond warm up. Nolan's back running normally but won't be racing tomorrow, so he went longer. Felt good, legs still tired though, need to put them up tonight. No ankle problems, it's only slightly sore when I walk around, feels normal when I run though, think I'm gonna pull through this one. Not very pumped about tomorrow, not nervous, going to be running all alone, just going to try and drop a good time, work on staying strong when running with the lead. | 5 |
| Friday AM: | Longfellow->BU Bridge Loop. Took awhile to get rolling this morning. Slept for 10 hours, so that was good, but the legs felt tired and run down, which wasn't good at all. I'll kick them up tonight and again tomorrow, hopefully they'll be feeling fresh for the race Saturday. Ankle is a little sore, but nothing serious. Takes a little while to warm up, that's all. I'll hit it with the I-squared treatment and it should be fine. | 5 |
| Thursday PM: | Fresh Pond around the Pond with Wildman. Maltas went Fake Fresh so he was with us for awhile. Nolan's starting to run again, I guess he strained some muscle on the top of his foot. Pretty uneventful run with Craig. Talked about season goals, trying to shift mindsets, etc. Watched the video of intrasquad, we started running really slow at the end of the race. Rolled my ankle pretty bad on the run, had to take a minute to let the pain subside before I could start up again. Didn't feel any ill effects from it though, it was pretty much just an intense shock with no damage. Starting to think about Alumni on Saturday, going to sleep a lot tonight, only got 6-7 hours last night due to a number of factors. | 10 |
| Thursday AM: | Got up at 11AM and logged a Longfellow->BU Bridge Loop. Need to get accustomed to going 5M in the mornings again, that was huge during cross. They opened up Longfellow again, so that's sweet. Hopefully I'll be able to salvage the week somewhat and turn in a somewhat respectable total. | 5 |
| Wednesday PM: | Fartlek to Arsenal. 2:00 intervals fast, tried to keep the rest fast, did a pretty good job of that. Nolan still ain't running with us yet. On the last couple I cut the rest back to 1:30 instead of 2:00 and that made the workout vastly more challenging. I think that's something I'd like to try to do more of. So today I slept from midnight til 10 and noon til 3:30, so I was pretty rested, but looking forward to getting some more sleep still. Legs feeling better, took awhile to get them really sore though, I don't know if that's because I was feeling really good or because I just wasn't working that hard. That's a main reason why I don't care for the fartleks and tempo runs on the road, no effective way to judge your effort. Coach said that Terry McNatt will be running the 5k at Alumni, so I might have somebody hanging on unless I really blaze, but he won't ever take the lead, so it's not really going to affect my race plan much. | 10 |
| Wednesday AM: | Woke up at 10AM to get in a morning run, after going to sleep at midnight. Ready to go finally with regular morning runs. Probably should have gone 5M, but that'll come soon enough. Good to be done with work, ready to get rolling on a strong season. But now, I think I'm going back to bed. | 4 |
| Tuesday: | Reservoir with a Summit Ave. add-on. Wanted to go longer today, but too tired and degected. Slept 1.5 hours last night trying to get GizmoBall to work, but only wound up getting it about 50-75% working before it was due. That was really depressing, didn't have a good run, not excited at all about it. Really need to get some motivation for this coming season, need to start working too, no more excuses. | 10 |
| Monday: | Tempo Run to Arsenal. 4x5:00 at 5M race pace, kept it fast in between intervals. Nolan didn't run today because his foot was hurting him, so I did it alone. Don't like doing those things by myself though. Almost bit it between Eliot and Arsenal, didn't notice the ice on the path. Legs aren't feeling amazingly fast or strong right now, need to work on that, especially during these workouts on the roads. One more tough night, then it's all over. Should have gone longer today, but just couldn't get excited about it. | 10 |
| Sunday: | Fresh Pond around the Pond from home. Added on a little at the end becuase it seemed a little shorter than I expected it to. Got rolling when I hit the Pond, but didn't hold it to well, but from Harvard Square back I was clipping pretty well, or at least it felt like I was clipping pretty well. Legs not as bad as yesterday, which is good, but they're still sluggish and will probably stay that way for a few days. Was tempted to add on a lot and make it a big mileage day, but given the way my legs were yesterday I'll build into the mileage a little slower. Also, there's still a lot more work to be done on GizmoBall. Due on Tuesday and then I'm done with it, good riddance. First half of the week should suck hard then, but second half should be filled with sleep. | 12 |

| Week 01 12/01-12/07 |
It was an alright first week. I'm assuming 12-15M on Sunday, so that would put this week right around 80M, and I'll move up accordingly. That probably contributed to my feeling horrible on the Saturday run, I just parachuted in at nearly 80MPW after a week of 0M and two weeks of relatively low mileage before that. Race wasn't anything to write home about, went out on pace and couldn't hold it. Figure to be running alone again next weekend, so I'll get another chance to work on running hard from the gun alone. Hopefully the AM runs will return with some regularity now. December Miles : 67 | 67 |
| Saturday: | Ran with Wildman to campus then through Franklin Park via Jamaica Pond. Legs not feeling so hot, hit the wall at about 50 mins, pretty much in struggle cat mode from then on. Stopped for a little while at the Reggie Lewis Center to use their facilities, there was actually a collegiate meet there at the time. Wildman watched Miller take the 800m in 1:57 or so. Not a very good run, legs really tired, probably a function of the long day yesterday and GizmoBall continues to kick my ass, but that's on it's way out. Hopefully I'll be sleeping a lot soon. | 12 |
| Friday: | 3k at the Intrasquad meet in 8:51. Nolan was doubling back from the 15, so he just put a saddle on me and rode me around the track, then started surging about 450m out. Managed to hold him off everytime though, got to the last 50m and exploded away, opening up the biggest gap of the whole race. Went out in 68, came through the half in 2:18. Had hoped to go sub 8:40, but needed some help from Nolan and didn't get it. Went out for 10M at the end of the meet with Nolan, Monty and Wildman. Legs took awhile to warm up, but then Wildman and I got moving pretty quick. Overall a good day, got a lot to learn about running from the front though. | 14 |
| Thursday PM: | Fake Fresh Pond in the snow. Over an inch had accumulated before we took off. Pretty good run, snow didn't affect it at all. Quads are the only part of my legs that are still sore, strides don't feel as fast anymore, which is good. Hopefully I'll be feeling good tomorrow, got a lot of work to take care of though. | 5 |
| Thursday AM: | Science Museum. Feels good to get back out on the AM runs, but I think they'll be sporadic until GizmoBall gets finished, then they'll begin in earnest. Short run this afternoon though, which prompted the early miles. I don't know what Roach is talking about, the dinosaur is still right there at the Science Museum. Maybe Roach is one of those dionsaurs whose eyes only detect movement. | 4 |
| Wednesday: | Reservoir Loop with a Summit Ave. add on. Moving pretty quick, feeling good still. Looking forward to the early season training runs where we just go for 10-15M, kind of got away from smashing the runs near the end of the cross season. Felt good at strides too, speed is leaving me though, I'm sure in a week I won't have it anymore. Quads still sore from the hurdles on Monday. Looking forward to intrasquad on Friday, Nolan and I should drop a quick 3k time. | 10 |
| Tuesday PM: | Nice fartlek along the river to Eliot St. Bridge. About 4M of 1:30 efforts with 1:50 fast between them. Path was icy in places, disrupted slightly. Feeling really good, workout wasn't hard at all, legs didn't feel that affected by it, maybe they were too cold, maybe the taper is still hanging around. Came back to MIT so Sean could take a quick pit stop, but wound up warming up and didn't feel like going back out for 4M of grass loops, so Sean and I logged it indoors. Horribly boring and drawn out, but warm nonetheless. | 12 |
| Tuesday AM: | Woke up to throw in 4M, but it was 16 degrees outside and felt like 0, according to weather.com, and I left the hat and gloves in my locker by accident, so no running this morning. I'll make it up after the fartlek tonight. | 0 |
| Monday: | Fresh Pond around the Pond. First day back so it got a little quick near the end, stretched the legs out, turned it over a little, nothing crazy though. Way too fast still, taper's been hanging around apparently. Time to get back to base mileage though. Another week of GizmoBall then things lighten up. Hurdle drills today instead of sprint drills, same as usual, need to work on the trail leg. | 10 |
| Sunday: | Long day of travelling and not much sleep last night left me feeling bad. As a result, I decided not to run, first day back will be tomorrow. | 0 |

| Saturday: | Had thought about running today, but never got around to it. Drove down to watch the Footlocker Regional with End and Chris Sandoval. Naturally, Solinsky won it. That's a good course to run but a horrible spectator course. Saw the start, the pack at 1.5M and the finish. It's pretty cold out here too. Going back to Boston early tomorrow and will throw down over 10-12M to get a good start to the indoor season, but until then, I'm going to enjoy doing nothing. | 0 |
| Friday: | Silver Spring with End. Good to get back at it, discovered I'd put on about 10 pounds in my time of lethargy. Just disgusting. Actually got moving pretty quick, clipped 5:30-5:40 in the middle, legs felt pretty good but got a little shaky. Mild side stiches throughout. Guess I'm losing the cardio quicker than I thought I would. Swimming must not have helped out that much. Nice to have somebody to run with, we're gonna go check out Footlocker Regionals tomorrow, had hoped to run down there, but don't think it's going to work out. (The mileage during Week 00 doesn't count.) | 7 |
| Thursday: | Had planned on running 6M in the AM, but failed to get up when my alarm went off and slept for another hour. Unfortunately, that might impede my turkey consumption today, which I am less than happy about. Mabye I'll get out tomorrow. | 0 |
| Wednesday: | Swam for 25 minutes after 7.012 Lecture. Broke it up into 200m segments, since that was about as far as I could get before having to dump the water out of my goggles. With 25m left on the 8th 200 my left calf cramped up, so I had to stop and loosen it up. Then started again and the right calf immediately cramped up, so I called it a day. Had planned on doing 9-10 200s. Was getting pretty tired, more in the arms though. This probably isn't helping anything, but it's a nice distraction from my currently unhealth lifestyle. | 0 |
| Tuesday: | Thought about swimming, but was too tired and the calves are still sore, was afraid they would cramp again. I'll grab a little time tomorrow before I head home. Enjoying the time off, but ready to get back and start pounding again. | 0 |
| Monday: | Swam for a little while after the 7.012 test. Took awhile to get the goggles to stop leaking, but after that things were alright. My lethargic lifestyle of the last day and a half left me feeling fat and out of shape, so I grabbed some exercise, although I'd rather be running. After maybe 15 minutes my calves started cramping up, I could feel it coming on for a couple laps, the calves would tighten up as I pushed out of my flip turn, and the second time it stayed cramped for a couple minutes, so I called it a day. They're both still sore, but I'm going back tomorrow. It's been awhile since my skin has smelled like chlorine. | 0 |
| Sunday: | Didn't do anything at all today, didn't even go outside. Occasionally I felt like I had to go for a run, but I'm forcing a couple days away on myself, time to clear the head and recharge. Plenty of work to do anyways. Maybe a couple runs near the end of the week, but no mileage accumulating this week. | 0 |
